You could try deleting the folder Steam\SteamApps\yourname\portal. That's probably no different than resinstalling, but I don't know.

I would contact Support. This error has been popping up lately (for Portal, and HL2Ep1, so far).

Move the folder <yoursteamID>\portal\bin to the desktop and try to launch Portal. Feel free to delete the folder on the desktop if it runs.

If darkrai's suggestion doesn't work, contact Support.

This seems to be a new problem.

gorpie, you did give me +rep for this, did you not? Unless I'm terrible mistaken, and it wasn't you, you just added 10 rep to my score.

Go into "User CP" at the top of any thread and you can find out. Most likely it was gorpie because few have the ability to hand our 10 points of rep.

What I love is that after the problem has already been resolved, people still feel the need to post fixes.

Oh, I forgot, it's an internet forum--and I'm expecting them to actually read!

C'mon guize--it was only 8 posts! Short ones, even.

The one who dug up the thread was posting a rather suspicious recommendation to download\install a unknown dll.

actually I'm still having that problem as well, so it seems it hasn't been fully fixed yet

Are you having the exact error message?

If so, are you deleting/moving <yourname>\portal\bin, not <yourname>\portal\portal\bin?

If not, what message are you getting?

yeah moving that bin folder and letting the game redeploy it from the gcf worked, thanks.

Well, I'm glad that dj-corny did because his workaround fixed my Portal installation and yours didn't.
No pun intended because you are trying to help as well but +rep to dj-corny for this one Thanks!
