TF2 Choppy Framerate/Sound

Hi,
I know there are a lot of posts similar to this one, but I was wondering if anyone else with similar specs was having the same issues. I have a previous gen MacBook Pro with a 2.5 Core 2 Duo, 2 GB ram, and a 512 MB Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT. In Windows on this computer, I can run the game at full detail and native resolution (1440 x 900), and while I expected a few performance issues in OS X, the game is almost unplayable, even with lower detail settings and 1280 x 800 resolution. The game will run smoothly for a couple seconds, and then slow down considerably for another couple of seconds. The sound also won't quite work, with the game sometimes muting, and other sounds lagging in. Portal runs decently on this computer, so is there something I'm missing with TF2?

which OS version are you presently running ?

Recommend setting gl_bufmode to 1 in your launch options (right click the title in Steam game list and go to properties

+gl_bufmode 1

It also helps to shut down other processes / apps and leave all Steam client windows closed.
