keyboard and mouse freeze

I was playing tf2 today when all of a sudden my soldier started walking backwards, then my keyboard shutoff. shortly after, my mouse shutoff and my keyboard came back on. then they mouse came back on and then both shutoff.

this is happening off and on and when i plug them back in they work again. when plugging into different usb ports is says device driver installation failed.

what should i do?

One of three things.

1 Mouse and Keyboard are dying. (unlikely)

2 Chipset controlling them is dying.

3 Drivers or software controlling the drivers (Windows)

For 1 and 2 all you can do is replace the parts and for 3 it is the place to start.

First off uninstall the drivers for keyboard and mouse in Computer Management/Device Manager, then let Windows reinstall the driver and see if it's any better, or if you have a keyboard that requires there own drivers (eg. Logitec G15) download and install them.

If it still happens i would back up the files you need and install the O/S again.

If it still happens after all that i would be thinking faulty Mainboard.

Also just to rule out do you have a spare keyboard and mouse kicking around to test?
