Bug - Objective won't show, can't progress

So I just got completely physically stuck in Thief: Deadly Shadows because the objective to find the sunken city in the docks sewers didn't appear when I read the appropriate book. Sadly, this being my first playthrough, I didn't even know that this was a bug until playing through everything else physically possible prior to that mission. Now, however, the mission glyph won't appear in the sewers. I found where the mission is supposed to commence, but it's impossible to start... so I'm completely stuck thanks to a ♥♥♥♥ing bug at the very beginning of the game.

Is the any solution and/or is this a known problem? It's incredibly frustrating and discouraging, as I'd have to start all over again to progress otherwise (which I probably won't do - there are other games out there).
