Please read through before trolling me! I have worked very hard on this.
Introduction: Team Fortress 2 is a team-based first-person shooter multiplayer video game developed by Valve Corporation. A sequel to Valve's previous Team Fortress Classic, it was first released as part of the video game compilation The Orange Box on October 10, 2007 for Windows and the Xbox 360. A PlayStation 3 version then followed on November 22, 2007. The game was later released as a standalone package for Windows on April 9, 2008. Team Fortress 2 was distributed online through the Steam system, while retail distribution was handled by Electronic Arts. The development of Team Fortress 2 was led by John Cook and Robin Walker, the designers who originally created the Team Fortress modification for Quake in 1996. The game was announced in 1998, powered by Valve's GoldSrc engine, but has since been through various concepts and designs. In 1999, the game appeared to be deviating from its predecessors by pursuing a more realistic and militaristic style of gameplay, but the design metamorphosed over its nine-year development period. The final rendition sports cartoon style visuals influenced by the art of J. C. Leyendecker, Dean Cornwell and Norman Rockwell and is powered by the Source engine. The game itself revolves around two teams, each with access to nine distinct characters, battling in a variety of game modes set in evil genius environments. The lack of information or apparent progress for six years of the game's development caused it to be labeled as vaporware, and it was regularly featured in Wired News' annual vaporware list among other ignominies. Upon its release, the game received critical acclaim and several awards, being praised for its graphical style, balanced gameplay, comedic value and for its use of full character personalities in a dedicated multiplayer game. Why is this important? On Thursday Bloomberg speculated that Steve Jobs was going to have the remainder of his pancreas removed, and on Friday they upped the ante by saying that based on information from people "monitoring his illness," Steve Jobs is considering a liver transplant. According to the report, neuroendocrine islet cell tumors such as the one Steve Jobs had surgery for in 2004 can often metastasize to the liver. And it's true, as noted on this USC Department of Surgery web page. Contacted by Bloomberg about it, Jobs gave them a fairly dramatic "no comment." "Why don’t you guys leave me alone - why is this important?" Unfortunately for Jobs' privacy, he has no one to blame but himself. Meaning, the success he has achieved at Apple has elevated him to near-god status among many investors. Once again, all this conjecture over his liver is speculation. And it makes one wonder if, while Dan Lyons feels that Apple has gotten a free pass up 'til now on the story of Steve Jobs' health, the pendulum has swung back too far in the opposite direction. In other words, since journalists appear to have been "fooled" so far by statements from Apple regarding Jobs' health, if any and all speculation and rumors are fair game. The story quotes Steven Brower, professor and chairman of surgery at Mercer University School of Medicine in Savannah, Georgia and a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Regarding a possible liver transplant if in fact Jobs' tumor metastasized to the liver, he said: "It’s one of the tumors for which transplantation can be considered. It’s rare, but it’s sometimes done." But here's the key: Brower hasn’t treated Jobs and doesn’t know details of his condition. There's only one way to end this all: for Steve Jobs to open up totally about his condition. That probably won't happen, unless he is forced to, by still further declining health, or by the SEC. We'll be watching. What you can do to help: Drive less. Yeah, OK, that's pretty simplistic. But the point is: You and I are not helpless bystanders in this mess. Offshore drilling—especially deepwater offshore drilling—is not a simple project that BP and other oil companies get involved in for the giggles. They do it because there is a demand for the oil. If we were to completely and permanently halt offshore drilling in this country, it wouldn't fix the problem. In 2009, 1.7 million barrels of oil were produced, every day, from offshore wells in United States. That's a drop in the bucket compared to our 19.5 million barrel a day consumption, or even the almost 9 million barrels of gasoline we burn through every day. But that doesn't mean offshore oil is inconsequential. If we don't get it here, we'll still get it from somewhere. And that has consequences, both for our pocketbooks and the environment. (Canada is the biggest exporter of oil to the United States. Eliminating offshore wells and increasing our use of tar sands is not exactly a healthy trade off.) Plus, as Jeff Vail of the Oil Drum blog told me, this model—complicated, risky drilling for a relatively small amount of oil—is the future. We simply aren't finding a lot more of those big, easily accessed wells that fueled the past century. These are the facts. And there's basically two ways of looking at them. One perspective assumes that U.S. oil consumption will only increase, that we must have this resource. Thus, we must have offshore wells. And lots of them. The other perspective: It's time to actually get serious about reducing our oil demand. With a 9% reduction in national daily gasoline consumption, we could eliminate our need for offshore oil. At 22.4 miles per gallon, that's just 4.2 fewer miles of driving, per person, per day. Bill Finch at The Nature Conservancy did this calculation back in May, but his numbers are a bit off from what I'm seeing on the Energy Information Administration site, so I'm going to do this again, real quick.
