Tilesets

Does anyone intend on making tilesets to release to the public to make maps? At the moment we have some limited resources, it would be great to see the community start mapping resources for such a thing, so that early mappers don't have to worry about building everything from scratch.

I am very interested in this as well. It would be a huge boon to those just using the Tile Map Gen thingy, almost as huge as sharing custom campaigns / maps with each other.

You have access to more resources if you jump over to Hammer (Source SDK) instead of the TileGen... downside is, Hammer takes a lot more work until you learn it well

Of course you have a lot more resources, but this would help grow the community very quickly, and I think even experienced modders/mappers can use the tilegen, since they can quickly copy and paste the pieces together and then jump back to hammer to detail.

Exactly. There is even a basic (orange) developer tile set already in the TileGen Editor, the other is an example tile set. For the bad awesome people who know their Hammer in and out, its still a great asset for those sketches / drafts one would normally do on a piece of graph paper.

Sharing tile sets among us would be simply phenomenal for the noob and experienced mapper alike.

Yeah, there must be some veteran Hammer users out there who could get this stuff out pretty easily (and efficiently) which would be great for those of us who aren't any good with it but want to make maps that are more interesting than a single (pretty limited) theme.

If I can figure out what I'm doing better, I'll share any tile sets I make

There is a tutorial on the Wiki if you haven't seen it yet, walks through how to create themes and room templates.

I am gonna make TF2 tilesets (Yeah, TF2 themed maps for Alien Swarm)
Too bad you gonna have to port TF2 textures and models to Alien Swarm for it.

Is it possible to make basic tiles from other SDK bases? Like a 1x1 tile done in an Aperture Science white hallway theme? I feel like if we made up like...5 or 6 (maybe 10?) basic tiles in a few different themes, we could start expanding on larger tiles.

I'm reminded of the Timesplitters 2 map making days of yore when you had the same basic principle: a bunch of premade tiles in different themes that link together. Making the small ones in Hammer wouldn't be all that difficult, I don't think and would give a lot of people some good practice with the tool.

What are everyone else's thoughts on this? Making the tilegen more versatile could help to reinforce the modding community as well.

Do we have that already? IIRC, the orange walled stuff, the Developer Tile Set, can have the Portal or Half Life 2 textures thrown up on them, correct? For someone who is way less of a noob that myself (pretty much first inclination to open up any Source editor has been because of Alien Swarm), I would hazard a guess this wouldn't be too hard, I hope.
