I've done it. Not sure how, and it didn't work out real well...but better than I had expected.

Certain games have support for that. They let you play a game not fully downloaded because it downloads all of the essential stuff first.

As for what games support it, I have no clue.

Really? That's fascinating! Anyone have any idea which games can do this?

Dark Messiah. The download had been erratic, so I figured I'd try the "play" option to see if it forced the download. To my surprise, it started. It sputtered and spit pretty much the whole time (except for the mini-dungeon/tutorial at the beginning). At one point, I even saw a bunch of red 3D text objects rotating...they said "Error". From their position, I am wondering if they were supposed to be in a pond or something.

I personally have only seen, and would only expect it, in MMO's...well, and in Dark Messiah, but I still wonder if that was just a weird fluke.

Source/GoldSrc games using GCF files are supposed to support download-as-you-go playing, obviously it needs to download the requisite parts before it can load them, so you might end up with a longer loading screen while it gets content from the servers. Probably the best game to test it with is HL1 as it's small by today's standards.

Get real if the game isn't installed yet you can't play it. Steam game, retail game it makes no difference. Until it is installed properly you ain't playing.

Now if you mean playing one game, while downloading another that is entirely possible.

"Installed" can be a rather vague state.

if you mean playing an online game while downloading from Steam , you have to use a third party program which gives the game the bandwidth it needs since Steam tries to use maximum speed while downloading
i recommend netlimiter
