This is why people pirate games.

I was bored and had an hour to kill, so I decided to start up Batman: Arkham Asylum, since I bought it months ago and never played it.

1: Start via Steam. Wait a few minutes while Steam downloads some 'Virtual C++ redistributable', even though I'm pretty sure every game in my library has installed it at least once

2: Finally finish installing stuff. A SecuRom prompt pops up, wanting my CD Key. I oblige.

3: The game menu finally opens, and I set up my graphical settings then click 'play'

4: Blank screen, and I can hear the intro movies playing in the background. Great. Oh well, I'll fix that later.

5: Ingame. A nice 'Click to Start' prompt. Gee, I wonder if this was a console port?

6: Games for Windows Live pops up. This is not good, because GFWL is a piece of . I've also forgotten my password, so I have to jump out of the game to reset it.

7: Finally back ingame with my GFWL id and password. I sign in, and am prompted for my CD Key again. Didn't I just give that to SecuRom? Whatever.

8: CD Key accepted, I'm prompted to install an update for Games for Windows Live. I can skip the update, I'm told, but if I do I won't be able to save. Fantastic. I click 'update'.

9: Punched out of the game again, while some other 'redistributable' installs.

10: Back ingame. I enter my GFWL id and password again, click through, and am prompted to update again. ARE YOU ING SERIOUS?

11: Back out to desktop. Update finished. Game starts again.

12: I re-enter my id and password for the 3rd time. Thankfully no update, and I finally hit the main menu of the game.

13: I quit the game, because I have to go to Volleyball.

this .

People pirate games because they have prior commitments? Well, if you say so.

Talk about blowing it out of proportion.

That's a shame, the game is really quite fun.

I take it the owners of the first three replies think the above situation is acceptable?

Are you kidding me? This industry has about the worst record of customer service on the planet after Telecommunications. When legitimate consumers have a worse experience than pirates, something is very very wrong.

Ohh cool man, really, cool stuff in there man.

Again, 2nd post, and full of trolling.

The only wrong thing here, is me giving attention to your bs, but i'm bored at work, kinda have an excuse :P

Now, come up with some decent stuff, if you want someone to actually pay you some attention.

While his thread title is an obvious troll, the content of his first post was spot on. GFWL is an abortion, and should have been shot at inception.

Is the process annoying? Sure. Is it a reason to pirate games? Hardly.

Because it asks you to update? Are you saying Steam doesn't do this about every week? The first update was for the client, and the second was for the game. There is nothing wrong with this.

Half/most of that list was user error, or only happens once. If you'd restarted the game once you'd got back from volleyball, you be at the main menu and ready to play in under 30 seconds.

And pirating the game instead wouldn't have helped you - the pirated version disables features necessary to continue, like gliding.

This would be better argument for why games shouldn't use GFWL.

Right. So if the game's activation process requires you to be anally by a large tattood prison king, it's all good because you only need to do it once.

Great input.

Except it doesn't, does it. It asks you to press cancel on the Visual C+ thing, press Ctrl+V to enter your CD key, set your graphics, then sign in to GFWL. All of this happens once, and lasts maybe 30-45 seconds. I think that's acceptable.

This sounds more of an issue with GfW:L which I hate, too... If it isn't updated, you can't really play the game

Maybe you should actually read his post. The GFWL process is far from straightforward, requiring back and forth between the browser and game. Just because you're used to this process doesn't make it a GOOD one.
