Question Help with steam avatars?

This subsection seemed more appropriate then the "Help" one anyway...

I noticed in avatars, no matter how small I make it, it always takes the center of a picture and never the whole picture. Again I tried lowering the size of the picture, but it still takes the middle and my "before" and "after" size change avatars look the same.

Here's a not so good visual I made on MS paint

The black is the outline of the whole picture. and the red is what steam always take out of the picture.

so yeah anyway to get past this? any tips to making steam capture the whole picture of the avatar?

i tried this just now. it actually captured the whole picture which was good. but not all pictures look good with exactly 184X184 so ill try toning down the width of the picts.

thanks but this hasnt excatly solved my problem for all images

i just need to know WHY steam has the tendency to take only the middle of the picture

Steam expects avatar images to be 184x184. If you upload an image that is not 184x184, three things can happen to make it that size.

The image can be resized to 184x184 and as a result the aspect ratio of the image will be skewed. You indicated in your previous post that you did not like that effect. This is what Steam usually seems to do.

Another thing that can happen is that a 184x184 section can be taken from the image. The aspect ratio will be preserved, but the image will be clipped. It sounds like this is what is happening in your original post.

A third thing that you could do manually is shrink the image down while maintaining its aspect ratio so that it can fit on a 184x184 background. That way the image will not be clipped or skewed, but will be smaller than the entire avatar size.

An entire non-square image cannot just be translated into a nice 184x184 square without a lot of image editing work. The three options above are the most practical routes you can go to upload your avatar. In any case, you should make sure the image you are uploading is 184x184 to prevent any unexpected behavior from Steam.
