You cannot play a game while it's downloading.

Hmmm.... Lets see....

The game is downloading, meaning the files are being put on to your computer. Those files never existed on your computer before. What the makes you think you can play while downloading ?

Can you play a game if it's not installed? No

EDIT: shouldve clarified more. the whole game technically doesnt have to be installed, but the main portions (ie: the engine) would have to be downloaded.

Apparently some of Valve's singleplayer games let you do so.

Yeah, some do such as Half-Life 1 where it'll prioritize downloading of the binaries first, then the levels. Granted it makes for long load times if you hit a level transition for a map that's still downloading.

Granted, the list that support that 'feature' are slim.

Considering that some applications can do it, might not be as stupid a question as you may think.

Also, iTunes movie downloads can do that AFAIK, but that is only one file.

That's officially the most stupid thing I have ever heard. "Could the world fall?" (Karl Pilkington) coming in on a close second.

One odd thing is that the "Play" button is available while the game is downloading. Of course, it will just explain to you that you need to wait for the game to be downloaded.
But I did find it confusing that the "Play" button was available at that point.

I do believe that if you are downloading game "A", and you launch game "b", you will then suspend the downloading of game "A" while game "b" is being played. I cannot say for sure about this, but for at least a few different games, that has occurred.

This will happen every time. Steam does not support playing a game at the same time as downloading another game.
