Can't talk to people in single player

I can't talk to the drunk guy in single player to do the first mission (to get the combination), he won't even tell me to get him some beer.

I hit the activate button but it does nothing, any ideas?

Hi,

Don't use the activate key, use the positive/follow key which is 'Y' by default.
