Play Steam's Riven on Mac OS X

Since Riven does not work properly in Windows 7, I started looking around to see if I could get it working on my mac. There is a project called "Riven X" that makes this possible in OS X 10.4.11 and above.

http://www.devklog.net/rivenx/

In OS X 10.6.4 I copied C:/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/common/riven to my Mac Desktop. When I started Riven X it asked to install from disk or file. I pointed it to the "riven" folder on my dekstop, and seconds later I was in the game. I've only played for a couple minutes but everything seems to be working!

I own the DVD anniversary edition of Riven which comes with a version for Mac (it's not OS X native of course). I copied all appropriate files in accordance with the readme to /Applications/Riven. I tried using Riven X 0.9.6 and the Riven main menu pops up; however, as soon as I press new game, it crashes. I don't believe it ever asked me for my Riven files, unless I'm forgetting.

I'm thinking it's because my files may be not be copied to the path it is trying to find (probably files that are meant to be left on the DVD?). I had issues getting Myst III to work on Snow Leopard until I copied the entire DVD to a subdirectory with label of the DVD.

The steam version is the 10 year anniversary DVD version, according to "Manual.pdf" which is located in the top-level of the riven directory.

It seems that someone has posted a bug on the project's site that sounds similar to your issue: https://bugs.launchpad.net/rivenx/+bug/590534

This is what the directory structure looks like for me. When I started Riven X for the first time I don't remember if I pointed it to the top-level "Riven" folder, or the "Data" sub-folder. In any case, I did not see the Riven main menu until I had made the selection.

FYI, played for about 3 hours tonight. Rock-solid stability. The movies all play, with less of a pause before they began that I was having on Windows 7. The only thing that seems to be missing is "zip" mode.

Thanks for posting this. I found my problem. I ended up following the readme on the disc to install Riven, but based on your directory list, some files were missing like jData1.MHK. Didn't see them on the disc. I uninstalled RivenX and instead installed from the DVD which is what I should have did in the first place. +rep

How did you get this to work? I've copied the files off my Windows install to may Mac but I keep getting the *** -[NSCFArray objectAtIndex:]: index (0) beyond bounds (0) error when I click new game.
I can't do what you've done as its was downloaded via steam. What should I do?
