Installing Doom 3 from Steam in LINUX!

Since we're still waiting for a NATIVE Linux client...

I've fooled around a bit to make the Steam version of Doom 3 work in Linux.

Step 1 - Getting your cdkeys
Install Doom 3 in Steam
Start the game
Once the game has started, exit it

Fire up regedit (Start->run type in regedit)
Check theses keys.

For Doom 3:
For Resurrection of Evil:
Copy the keys in a text file and save it on your drive. (but you could always note it down)

Reboot in Linux.

Step 2 - Installing Doom 3 in Linux

Download the latest version of Doom 3 from id Software's ftp.

Start a terminal.

Make the downloaded file executable and execute it:
chmod +x doom3-linux-x.x.xxxx.x86.run
sudo ./doom3-linux-x.x.xxxx.x86.run
Mount your Windows partition.
sudo mount /dev/<your windows drive:parition> /media/WINDOWS
Copy the missing base files.
cd /usr/local/games/doom3/base/
sudo cp /media/WINDOWS/Program\ Files\ \(x86\)/Steam/steamapps/common/doom\ 3/base/pak00*.pk4 .
Copy the missing d3xp files.
cd /usr/local/games/doom3/d3xp/
sudo cp /media/WINDOWS/Program\ Files\ \(x86\)/Steam/steamapps/common/doom\ 3/d3xp/pak000.pk4 .
Start the game.
Enter your cdkeys and enjoy!

I've based this small tutorial on this Ubuntu doc:

Here's a good reference to fine tune your config:

Damn, that's a lot of steps just to get the game to work on Linux.

Somebody should Sticky this Thread.
It could help people out in the future.

Instead of looking up your key in the registry, you can just copy the doomkey and xpkey files to /home/username/.doom3/base.

Arch Linux has an AUR package for Doom 3. If you use packer, just do:

# paccker -S doom3
If not,
$ wget http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/doom3/doom3.tar.gz
$ tar -zxvf doom3.tar.gz
$ cd doom3/
$ makepkg
# pacman -U doom3-*.tar.xz
And then:
$ cd /path/to/steamapps/doom3/base
# cp pak00{0,1,2,3,4}.pk4 /opt/doom3/base
$ cp doomkey ~/.doom3/base
Obviously $ denotes user and # denotes root.

I'd love to have a clean version of this tutorial on my wiki. Possibly with iodoom3 stuff too.

Check out the UT tutorials for samples.

Register and make a wiki version on your user page. I can make a page when it's ready (had to take out page creation due to spam).
