Because they charge $510 for a single 2GB 5870, and that doesn't include a plastic case or carrying bag, or the prestige of a 'limited edition'.

Regardless, it's hardly worth it.

The gun is the case it comes in. So basically, they charge a couple hundred dollars for packaging material molded like a toy gun, which you will throw away once the novelty's worn off.

I don't really want to know, because I expect I'll be disappointed in any number of ways.

Presumably, they felt that they needed to include some worthless prestige item in what is, effectively, a collector's edition, and decided that a misshapen hunk of plastic would be preferable to a magazine, pewter figure, or miniature helmet.

It's expensive mainly due to two things.

First, it has 4GB of memory. This allows for huge resolutions when using eyefinity.

Then, it also has SIX video outputs, which is the maximum number of monitors that eyefinity supports without some extra hardware.

I was thinking along the lines of: "someone will pay that price for it".

Someone in the consumer comments claims to have bought 2, I'm guessing he doesn't have a wife.

She might also start searching for a divorce lawyer.

The 5970 is built for eyefinity, and the fact that it comes with this stuff is an undoubtedly stupid marketing gimmick, although XFX is by far my favorite GFX card mfg. besides eVGA

5970 simply costs as much as 2 HD 5870's. And it actually is two HD 5870's fused together as one. They also cost a lot because they perform higher than NVIDIA's offerings (and consume less energy and heat) so of course need to be set at higher prices to reflect that.
