Update graphic drivers and Re-Install the DirexctX and c++

-If you are running in Windows Vista or Windows 7, please completely exit Steam, and right-click on the shortcut which you use to launch Steam and select "Run as Administrator."

-If you are running in Windows XP, take the following steps (ignore these if you are using Windows 7 or Vista):
1) Exit Steam.
2) Go to the "Start" menu, select "Run", type "regedit" and click "OK".
3) Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREVALVE
4) Right click and select "Permissions"
5) Check the "Allow" boxes for "Admin" and "System" for both "Full control" and "Read".

Then verify the GCF for this game:
Title: Verifying Game Cache Files (GCF)
Link: http://support.steampowered.com/kb_a...2037-QEUH-3335

Verifying the GCF solves many issues for most games.

If the issue persists, you may also need to manually run secondary installers required by this game.

Exit Steam entirely.

Browse to your Civilization V installation folder (Usually C:\Program files\Steam\Steamapps\Common\sid meier's civilization v\)

Run the following installers:

...\Steamapps\Common\sid meier's civilization v\VCRedist\vcredist_x86.exe

...\Steamapps\Common\sid meier's civilization v\DirectX\DXSetup.exe

Reboot your computer and test the issue again.

If you continue to have difficulty, please also run the following installer:

...\Steamapps\Common\sid meier's civilization v\DirectX\D3D11Install.exe

Reboot once more and test the issue again.

** See original post at http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/sho...&postcount=178 ************************************************** ****************

FIXED: by posts and fooling around

* Disabled the service UxSms = Desktop Window Manager Session Manager **Note this probably did nothing would not recommend trying this fix
* Increased screen resolution to native = 1920 x 1080 ** again in theory this should have no effect bc running windowed mode at 1280 x 720? Although BigDen from firaxis says otherwise, guessing they would know better.
* adjusted user settings ini file to skip intro video C:\Users\computername\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\usersettings.ini --> SkipIntroVideo = 1
* adjusted fullscreen mode C:\Users\computername\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\ --> GraphicsSettingsDX9.ini and GraphicsSettingsDX11.ini --> FullScreen = 0
* reinstall directx = F:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\sid meier's civilization v\DirectX -> run as administrator (right click option) DXSetup.exe and D3D11Install.exe
* started the game directly from gamepath executables F:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\sid meier's civilization v\ = CivilizationV.exe or CivilizationV_DX11.exe ** in theory this should not make a difference either. just have not had time to finish testing. So should work from steam library link or shortcut too.

Q - What specific issues happened? Don't know, suspect graphics issues relating to files (images files from 2k are corrupt) that steam installer has bad image files and we are downloading and it is not installing correctly. Or programming error somewhere with graphics. Why? bc Directx installation was the only one that seemed to do something different or new and the installation did not say i had already had it installed. This usually means it is an newer version that has not been installed previously.
A2 - also i have seen screne resolution and DPI setting affect menu options, although doubt that this is an issue here.

Q - C:\ drive versus F drive.
A - I installed steam to the F drive for most users will be C drive ex. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\sid meier's civilization v

Q- What is an *.ini file or how to open?
A - it i just text file used by programmer to save settings or info.
A - Open it using text editor. In windows 7 just double click on the file and it wil open in text viewer to edit it. ex. UserSettings.ini --> change the value on line "SkipIntroVideo = 0" to "SkipIntroVideo = 1" (obviously no quotes)

Q - How to run DXSetup.exe in administrator mode?
A - right click on the filename --> on the menu item click on "Run As Administrator"

Q - Screen resolution?
A- Big Den from firaxis said: The game only supports resolutions of 1024 x 768 and higher. Please make sure you're desktop resolution is at least set to this resolution or higher. Trying to play this at a lower resolution can cause this to happen. http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/sho...&postcount=121
A- Also have notice some screen resolutions and dpi setting may mess up onscreen menus, layout and text / loading. Always believe graphics were scalable but trust Firaxis developers the people who built it would know.

Q - DirectX 9 or DirectX11 ?
A - Surprising not that many games today are direct11 (or dirctx10), although they should be. Civ looks like crap in directx9 ! The fog of war is just blackness. It looks GhettO! and i dont mean ghetto fabulous, just horrible. If you are able to play directx 10/11 = look surprisingly good. haven't had much time to play as just arrived home = so hopefully other bug or issues won't into play.
A - Older graphic cards are not able to play DirectX11.

* dont know this one. U gotta figure out on your own. My card is Directx 10 = nvidia 260M but seem to work okay
* Direct X11 >= greater than Nvidia GT 300 series
* DirextX 11 >= ATI 5800 series
* most new cards purchased in the last 2 years are dirextX10 compatible (yeah = better civ graphics)

A - Also you OS limits which directX. When you install DX, it installs all DX versions 9/10/10.1/11 etc. Then it is up to the OS to decide what the OS can handle. **more info http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/e...1-50ceb6d8fa8d

* XP = DirectX 9
* Vista = DirectX 9/10/10/10.1 and updated to 11 (although not confirmed)
* Windows 7 = DirectX11

Q - Other Known Issues?
A- Seems like some international people ex. Frenchies are having issue with accents in the usernames or computernames and thus file cant be found or load . So they are changing their names or setting up and english only (no accented characters) administrator account and installing steam and the game from there.
A - don't really know cause it doesn't affect me..??

Civ5 CRashes on Start - no joy DX9 or DX11
Been reading the forums on steam and here, but the of course tried it all and no joy. Frustration at pre-purchasing and waiting for month only to have crash.

Asus G51vx-a1 Laptop
Intel quad q9000
Nvidia 260M 1GB (dx10/11 card)
4 GB ram
Windows 7 E 64bit up to date (patched) as of this week
dropped screen resolution on step below to 1280 x 720 landscape bc text easier to read in native resolution. Thus NO increase of text DPI
Kapersky AV (disabled on game run)

Preloaded game in steam. Decrypted. Updates and run. Tried dx10/11. Opens and runs video and the at end of video screen turns black with music playing. System stays there with music playing indefinitely. Tried playing dx9. Intro video plays app crash on CivilizationV.exe .

* Steam --> properties -> local files --> verify integrity = 1 file corrupt and will download automatically
* Updated microsfts dx drivers to latest. June 2010?
* updated Nvidia drivers to latest beta 260.63_notebook_winvista_win7_64bit_international_ beta Sept 2010.
* checked directxdiag to verify versions and updated.

- Fresh install from steam of civ5. Still file integrity issue, again.

RESULT = same crashes with same errors (See Below)

Hey driis sorry to hear it. The DirectX10/11 is pretty good game. Let us know what you have done so far and your setup.
  1. erase the game from steam
  2. update graphics drivers (used latest nvidia beta)
  3. service pack update on OS
  4. dot net update
  5. increase the screen resolution
  6. verify Graphics cards direct X version by hardware. Does your card support DirectX 9, 10, 11
  7. Reboot
  8. Download Civ from steam again
  9. CHeck file integrity
  10. retsart steam
  11. Adjust INI files for windowed mode
  12. Run the Game
  13. see if intro video plays
  14. Adjust INI to skip = eliminate intro video
  15. Reinstall C++ (vcred) and DIrectX ** must be done from steam directory and as administrator **
  16. Reboot
  17. voila ?

------------------------------------

There seem to be many bugs but for this one here is the solution set that i have tested myself and know works to get to gameplay for the issues i have experienced. Obviously not everyone has the same problem. Good luck.

General Issues:

1. Incorrect or not updated drivers (graphics)
2. Some people have foreign language (french / spanish) accents characters in gamepath ex. accent e
3. Most common = suspect steam pack or installer does not install correctly or maybe corrupt from source. Reinstall C++ (VCred) and DIrectX as administrator from steam applications.
4. Graphics & poor programming issues

Good luck, -=DocDire=-

Thumbs down new Patch and New Bugs = Civ5 v1.0.0.17

Steam left a nice steaming pile of dog #&*! called update patch v1.0.0.17. == September 26, 2010

************************************************** *************
* Note older version Civilization V version v1.0.0.07 was fixed from above posts.*
************************************************** *************

Looks like the new patch has cause couple of issues:
  • unable to load saved games DirextX11
  • DirectX10/11 crashes on start of game
  • save games do not work turn >= 160 . Although some people have crashes at different levels(turns). maybe relates to when the patch was DL automatically by steam?
  • directX9 works bellow turn 160.
  • C++ run-time error

2k Thread = http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=89787

Hope they fix it soon, but that credibility gap is starting to look like the grand canyon.

Exclamation Civ5 C++ Runtime Error on game load & Civ5 Crashes when starting the game

Was playing the game peacefully to turn 160+ when we fixed the previous issues until the new patch Civilization Version: 1.0.0.17. After that have received three new problems.

- new graphics drivers
- re-installed Vcred C++ and DirectX

Nvidia GTX 260M 1GB (directx 10) = latest beta drivers
4 GD Ram
ASUS G51VX-A1 Laptop
Kapersky AV
Running in windowed mode at 1280 x 720
Was playing comfortably last night without incident saved the games. Came home from work tonight and tried to load the game and it crashed with C++ runtime error. WTF?

Apparently steam had done an update patch to v1.0.0.17.

Tried to reinstall VCred C++ again and DirectX again (no joy). Defragged steam files and verified integrity again.

************************************************** ************************
-PROBLEM 1: C++ Runtime Error ---------------------------------------------------------------------
************************************************** ************************

Issue:
Tried loading the game in DirectX10/11. Game starts. Then try to load a savegame. The savegame crashes before the splash screen and before the map shows up.

Tried starting a new game. After entering the new game map before i can move a piece it crashes as well.

Tried loading another savegame. Ex LVL 10 it aslso crashes as soon as the map shows up.

Question Crash - MSVCR90.dll

REPOST from: BigDen at Firaxis http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=89837

Report Id: fcb6c811-c880-11df-9fa3-00248c8c9c04

Try the following to correct it:

Run the command "sfc /scannow" from a command window.

That is - go to start -> accessories -> command prompt, and write "sfc /scannow" there.

You need to have admin privilegies to do so. If it doesn't work without, simply right click the shortcut to "Command prompt" and select "Run as administrator". (Assuming you run Win7. This might differ somewhat on older operating systems)

For more information on the sfc command, you can have a look here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310747

I am having same problem too.

When I try to load my game (on turn 31) it now crashes every time giving me Runtime Errors.

Things I tried:
-I tried the whole Visual C++ 2010/2008 uninistall/reinstall thing and it did not work.
-I also have the latest manufacturer based drivers as well as the latest windows 7 updates.
-Tried setting all graphics settings on the game to bare minimum and doesn't work.
-I can create new games and they work just fine.
-I can play game on max graphics settings just fine and no lag.
-This is purely a game loading issue after you been playing a while.

Suspicion?:
I should note (this may or may not be unrelated) that everything was working fine in the game until i ran windows update and after the update/reboot...I tried to play the game and now I cant load games in dx9 OR dx11 versions.

Setup:
OS: Windows 7 64Bit
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3GHZ
RAM: 4 Gigs Ram DDR2 1066
GPU: BFG Nvidia GTX 280
SOUND: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Pro

1 day of game play and now I can't play it again unless I start a new game (which I won't do until this bug is fixed) I hope a solution can be found it seems semi widespread.

Thumbs up FIX: mouse pointer far below the buttons to get them to light up

Another graphics error: http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/sho...11&postcount=2
---------------------------------------------------------------
Q - I'm having the same problem except when the Yes/No window appears I have to place my mouse pointer far below the buttons to get them to light up DAGUR

Resetting the character DPI or magnification to native (none). Voila.
  • GOTO: display setting = Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Display
  • -->where it says "Make it easier to read whats on your screen" --> choose smaller = 100% default
  • look at running in windowed mode and make sure to match the native resolutions as posted in the next post

FIX = Instructions = http://forums.steampowered.com/forum...hp?p=17093795;
Hey made mistake here. Had the same error just now when trying to load. Here is what happened:
  • dropped screen resolution to 1280 x 720. So i dont have to squint when reading text on the screen.
  • game resolution 1920 x 1080 full screen (So it was higher)
  • mouse pointer is way off of buttons on menu screen after ESRB screen

Fix:
  • increase desktop screen to full HD native = 1920 x 1080
  • run game in windowed bellow 1920 x 1080
  • bigden? at firaxis recommends running in windowed mode, guess a lower resolution than desktop screen ex. = 1280 x 720 ??
  • *** also believe dual monitor mode is not supported *** although not confirmed

**SOLUTION**************

Looks like a mismatch between screen and game resolution in full screen mode. Also possible use of enlarge desktop character or magnification is greater than 100% in display DPI settings.

***********************

Q - Screen resolution?
A- Big Den from firaxis said: The game only supports resolutions of 1024 x 768 and higher. Please make sure you're desktop resolution is at least set to this resolution or higher. Trying to play this at a lower resolution can cause this to happen. http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/sho...&postcount=121

Red face

New update. Looks like savegame glitch that increases the save-game file size. Cannot load savegame files greater than 24MB. Firaxis promises fix soon. No fix yet = Sept 27, 2010.

Even more specifically, it seems there may be an issue in the saving that causes the save file to grow abnormally even if the game state does not change. What I mean by this is that the save file will grow by upwards of 150K+ simply by loading a game and then saving it.

If I quick save early on in the game (within the first 5 turns) the save file is roughly 350K. If I then load that quick save, and then simply save again without changing a single thing in game, the file increases to 500+K. Given enough instances of this the save file can grow exceptionally large (further aided by the autosave feature and save file growth from actually game elements as a game progresses). I've noticed that crashes and slow downs really begin kicking in around 20-24 MB save files. I have not been able to get a save file over 24 MB without continuous crashing.

I originally encountered this when experimenting with the "New Random Seed" option by saving a reloading a lot to see the odds of certain things occuring, and originally thought it may be directly related to the Seed, but I have verified that it occurs without that option checked as well.

Now, granted, in a standard game I doubt you will save/load enough for this to be noticed, but it certainly does happen and completely stops your ability to play that save any further.

The fact that it adds that much data to a save file when nothing in the game state has changed is very suspect and could also potentially be related to other issues people are having.

Fix: New Patch = New Game Crash Civ 1.0.0.20 ?

Was so frustrated erased the game last week.

New present landed on my doorstep, Civilization v1.0.0.20 steaming pile of %^&*& on my computer that crashes on start up. Gave me C++ or application error right when loading a game or after the intro video.
------------------------------------------------

Fix: v 1.0.0.20 = Oct 3, 2010

1. GOTO C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\sid meier's civilization v\DirectX\DXSetup.exe --> and run as administrator (right click option) the direct X installation files & D3D11Install.exe (durct x 11? installation files)

2. reinstall C++ library --> c:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\sid meier's civilization v\VCRedist\ --> vcredist_x86.exe --> run as administrator --> **note the is actually the VCRED 2008 Sp1 C++ x86 redsitributable.

3. Download the following from Microsoft and install them:

Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/e...D-3802B2AF5FC2

Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x64)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/e...4-157CFDFFEE4E

Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/e...3-37BF0912DB84

Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x64)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/e...F-9350143D5867

4. Rebooted.

5. Voila was playing Civ5.
-------------------------------------------
Installed x64 bit version because running windows 7 64bit. It probably wont make a difference as the game is most likely programmed in 32bit. And reinstalled or repaired when asked to do so bc some of the installs may overlap.
