Is the demo supposed to work?
I downloaded and installed the demo, but after the video intro (with the guy in the tepee), the game crashes. It still shows up in the taskbar and the music is playing, but the game doesn't appear on the screen. Will this game run on Windows 7 64-bit? A summary of my specs are below:
Core 2 duo 3.0, running at 3.2Ghz HD5770 (drivers are up to date) 4GB Patriot Ram Windows 7 64 bit If the demo doesn't work on my system, can I assume that the full game won't work either? Thanks for any advice/help that anyone can offer. |

Yeah it runs on Windows 7, try verifying the game files.

Thanks for the reply Wiggums. I tried verifying the integrity of the game cache. The demo's just not working for me, even though my specs are more than adequate. Bummer...no purchase for me.

Just to make sure, have you tried both the dx9 and dx10 versions?

Yeah, thanks Danny, but same thing happens with the DX9/DX10 version. It goes through the cinematic, then just disappears. Thanks for the suggestion though.
This is on my HTPC, with a fresh install of Windows 7 64-bit (with all of the updates). With the exception of Terminator Salvation, all of my other Steam games work without a hiccup. |

Yeah, it *should* run with these specs. I can't really suggest anything useful, unless you feel like digging through the ini files and disabling all features you can find (since you can't get to the settings dialog)...

Definitely don't feel like digging into a bunch of ini files tonight. One thing I noticed though...when I verify the integrity of the game cache, it says that one item failed to validate and will be reacquired. It then downloads the file, and says "success" (or something along those lines). But then when I go to start up the game...same thing happens...cinematic, then crash. Go to verify again, and same message (one item failed to validate). I thought it might be my antivirus (Sophos), so I shut it off, but that didn't solve any thing.
Signing off for the night. Thanks again for trying to help a brother out. |

Here are some threads about the problem on the 2k forums in case you haven't looked yet, several suggestions in there with mixed success:

Crash causes go all the way up to "special characters in Windows user name"... wow. |

Danny, I visited the first link in your post, and tried the simplest recommendation there, and it worked! I can play the demo now.
The solution?...all I did was increase my screen resolution as recommended in that thread. My desktop resolution on my HTPC is normally pretty low (1152x648), so that text, icons, etc are visible from my couch. I Increased the resolution and the demo works like a charm now. Thanks for taking the time to help me out. Cheers Mate! |
