Spamming Workers

I find it annoying that a military unit can only take one worker at a time. It makes it possible to spam workers all over the place just to slow down troops.

Sure, yeah if you can afford it it's a viable strategy. Won't last long anyway.

You could also just place your troops strategically. All units slow down considerably when moving in the squares adjacent to an enemy unit. No need to sacrifice workers en masse.

For the sake of a good argument, usually large empires have quite a few workers on hand.

spamming workers to slow you down is hardly a game winning strategy. I just use the first few turns to find a good choke point to plant my city. you start a little behind everyone else but you can make up for it with less military units needed to feel safe.
