The LAW: A lot nicer now, one suggestion

I've just played two rounds with level 6 demo and the LAW (full team, not solo). And I really got to say it's actually fun to use now, deals quite a lot of damage and really takes groups of zeds out. It's still a little suicidal to use because of the HUGE explosive radius, but it seems it has an arming rage now? I hit a stalker right in my face one time and it just popped like with the gren launchers, no damage done to me.

There's one problem, though: you still have no secondary weapons besides the 9mm and the ammo is really low (15 rockets). While the low ammo is balanced by the big damage, maybe there could be a way to give the demo a little more defense.

I was thinking along the lines of a perk bonus starting with demo level 3 or so, reducing the LAW weight by either just one block (enabling him to buy pipe bombs) or four blocks (which allows either the M79, a second 9mm, handcannons, MP7 or the MAC-10). I don't know if a 4 block reduction would be too much or if there is no wish at all to add a little more survivability to the LAW, but I just wanted to suggest this.

Overall, the LAW lost its "meaningless" status, in my opinion. I just still wouldn't use it in Suicidal in its current state, I think. :)

Demo has always had a law damage bonus. It's just most people never noticed or bothered trying it out because it was listed as as support weapon in the store. This video was made prior to the patch but still applies after patch 1014.

A suggestion that has been thrown around was to allow alt fire to be a melee attack, basically using the LAW to bash a specimen which is pretty hilarious to me. It could deal something equivalent to an axe which means even an empty law could still dish out some damage.

I wouldn't mind a decrease in weight by one, so Demolitions could carry pipe bombs.

Even though the LAW now, ever since the update has a huge blast radius. You still only have 15 shots, so you really need to pick your shots and make them count.

The extra pipe bombs would help that factor.

Oh ok, my bad then. I saw this

Quote:
Demolition

* Moved the LAW to the Demolition perk
* Increased the damage radius of the LAW
* LAW gets perk bonuses for the Demolition perk
and automatically assumed the perk bonuses weren't added before, never really compared the LAW used by different perks, to be honest. At least the increased blast radius is quite obvious, though, and helps a lot with large groups.

But the suggestion remains valid either way, I guess. :)

Yeah the wording was vague, but the bonuses are obviously the reduced pricing and extra ammo. Also, the demo gets a damage bonus for the impact damage of rockets/nades that are duds i.e. the ones that haven't reached minimum arming distance.

Decreasing the weight of a weapon though as you level up the perk really isn't the way go I feel. It's not like the weapon is magically changing before your eyes as you level up. I think just decreasing the weight to 13 to allow pipes or adding an alt fire melee bash would be better suited. Personally I like the law bashing but that's just me

I had two reasons to think of it as a perk bonus:
First, I thought it shouldn't be available for any perk.
Secondly, it could be some kind of familiarisation to the weight of the LAW by the demo, like when berserkers run faster with melee weapons.

On the other hand, I don't think other perks would even use the LAW, so maybe it could be generally reduced to 13 blocks in weight? The melee bash alt-fire sounds great, too, and I don't think both suggestions cancel out each other. Could be done both, the weight reduction is just less work for RO2-stressed TWI. :)

If the LAW's weight was lowered to 10 (a big change I know), it would still allow for a secondary weapon, (handcannon, mac10, medic gun, m79 for example) This might be a big change, but I think it would make the weapon more viable. As it stands, 15 shots is not much at all. Perhaps making a minor change like the support specialist gets with the weight increase. Let a demo level 6 have 3 or 4 more weight slots. Though that would let a non LAW demo able to use a shotgun, an M79, and an M32. Leaving the option to slightly lower the weight of a LAW based on your demo level.

I just feel like 15 shots really isn't enough, especially considering the lack of secondary weapon.

My 2 cents for what it's worth I guess.

thats why i carry the law with support specialist...so you can also carry a deagle..plus a katana ...or law and pump shotgun... thats why support is my favorite class cause he can do everything and carry many different weapon combos

True, but with the LAW ultimately moved to demo, it should be more tailored to the perk, too, shouldn't it? :)

I think all three suggestions are reasonable (just to recap):
  • Reducing the LAW's weight by 1 block to allow pipebombs
  • Reducing the LAW's weight by 4 blocks to allow an additional sidearm
  • Adding an alt-fire "melee bash" attack to the LAW (mentioned by strike)
Or a mixture of 1 / 2 and 3. :)

Would the melee attack be improved if used by a berserker class? :P

I kinda like the LAW, but i never use it because it sucks not being able to wear any decent backup weapons.
Reduced weight would be the way to go imo.

Well, going to take some getting used to. Nearly killed myself the first time I tested the LAW update. If only the explosion animation was modified to show the explosion itself and maybe we'll keep ourselves alive longer...
