Q3A too dark, brightness setting not working?

I'm waiting for my desktop to be fixed, and in the meantime I'm seeing what I can play on a borrowed laptop which has an Intel card.

So I decided to give Q3A a try. The first couple single player maps ran great at 1080p max settings, but its just too dark and the brightness controls don't do a thing! Is this an Intel GPU issue? Is there a workaround?

seta r_ignorehwgamma "0" makes things bright but very bland. Is there any way to just make the brightness control work?

Edit: Nevermind, found it - after setting r_ignorehwgamma to "0" I also needed to tinker with r_gamma.
