Hard Drive Swap
So my my friend has two identical laptops. Same model and everything, anyways i swamped his hard drive and he says the hard drive is missing everything (but logs into his windows and all desktop files are there). Shouldn't everything still be on there?

You swamped it? What? Did you mean that you reformatted it?

Yes, please explain what you mean by "swamped" That's not a term that hardware geeks use, ever.

You would need to 'clone' it for everything to be the same.

Let me re-explain it to make sure
Laptop 1 (broken) Laptop 2 (working) He wants the information from laptop 1 onto laptop 2. Just i just exchanged the hard drives from laptop 1 to laptop 2, wouldn't all data still be on there? |

You can either clone it on a third PC, or just get a USB to sata cable and copy the data that way.

It could be a matter of encryption, which disallows data written to the hard disk from one PC to be unreadable on another PC.
Speaking of which, did he encrypt any of the files from the damaged laptop? |

I will go out on a limb and guess that he wasn't using encryption. Even if he did, the encryption would be on the hard drive, and moving it to another laptop, all the encryption should work just fine.
My guess is that all his files are still there, and the guy just doesnt know what he's talking about. |
