[Fallout: New Vegas] G.E.C.K. & Game Mod's Installation Information

Fallout: New Vegas players have the ability to create their own custom content for the game using the G.E.C.K. editor alongside installing modifications publicly made available by other community members. This thread outlines how the G.E.C.K. editor may be installed alongside game modifications.

What Is The "G.E.C.K."?

The Garden of Eden Creation Kit (G.E.C.K.) is the set of tools provided by Bethesda Softworks to allow players create, modify and edit data for use with Fallout: New Vegas. The G.E.C.K. stores created custom data in specific Data Files which may then be activated resulting in the data being read by Fallout: New Vegas and translated into the game.

The G.E.C.K. allows players to expand Fallout: New Vegas in any way they see fit. Players may create their own custom locations, quests, characters and much more.

Ownership of Fallout: New Vegas is required to create and play content created with The Garden of Eden Creation Kit.

How Do I Install The "G.E.C.K."?

The G.E.C.K. tool-set is not provided with the retail version of the game and as a result must be installed manually. Details on how to install the G.E.C.K. are provided below.
  • Download the installer from this location.
  • Un-zip the downloaded package your Fallout: New Vegas installation folder.
  • Your Fallout: New Vegas installation will usually be "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas".
  • Click GECK.exe to run the G.E.C.K. application.

The G.E.C.K. may be added to your "My Games" list for easy access by following the details outlined in this FAQ.

Where Can I Find Information As To How To Use The G.E.C.K.?

The official website for the G.E.C.K., located here, contains various tutorials as to how to best utilize the kit. The video tutorials are particularly helpful.

How Do I Install Downloaded Fallout: New Vegas Mod's?

Fallout: New Vegas players may wish to make use of game modifications created by other players. Information on how to install and activate mod's is listed below.
  • Download the game modification.
  • Extract the files to your Fallout: New Vegas "Data" folder. This folder is usually found in "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas\Data".
  • Launch Fallout: New Vegas.
  • Select "Data Files" when the game launcher opens.
  • Check the mod you wish to activate.

The modification will now be translated into the game.

Sorry, turns out you have to put the files from the download into your Fallout: New Vegas forum. FAQ updated.

Download GECK NV 1.1, unzip its content to your Fallout New Vegas folder (Steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas) and simply run Geck.exe from there.

People are forgetting to mention something basic here. When you extract the zipped file to "steamapps/common/fallout new vegas", it may automatically create a folder titled "GECK_NV_1.1". This folder blocks GECK.exe from reading the libvorbisfile.dll.

The solution is equally basic. Cut or copy all files out of that GECK folder and paste them directly into the "fallout new vegas" folder, with all the other executables and .dlls. If GECK.exe is in the same place as FalloutNV.exe, then it will run.

The zip does not contain any folder so, unless you specifically instruct your unzipper to create one, the files will be unzipped directly into the destination you choose.

I'd like to know this, too. My unique marksman carbine (the All-American) suddenly went missing from my inventory and in trying to find out why I found both that other people are having items randomly disappear from storage boxes in their rooms (Lucky 38 room for me) and that spawning a new one from the console will prevent me from getting achievements in the game.

Not to hijack the thread for my All-American carbine, I just want to make sure that nothing I make with the G.E.C.K. will effect my achievements in any way.

"The Fallout: New Vegas G.E.C.K. editor will be available to download from two places: on Steam, and through the Fallout website.

The website mirror is now live. Download the New Vegas G.E.C.K. here.

The Steam version should also be available shortly, and will be listed under the "Tools" section of the application. "

I used the GECK to speed up my character's walking and run speed a bit, lowered the number of choices in hacking terminals to make them a bit easier and made the mysterious man appearance probability a bit higher. i like my modded game better this way, and thank the developer for giving us the opportunity to custom tailor the game to our playing styles.

Yeah for some reason I hated and took so much time to hack those terminals, it was driving me nuts. And the walking and running seemed too slow.
