Problem: try to launch game demo from steam yet fails to launch

Behaviour result error box appears: Shank's main executable

Specs:
Athlon XP 2800+ 2ghz cpu
Geforce 7800GS AGP graphics card
Corsair 2x1GB 3200 / 400 DDR ram
Windows XP SP3 os

Possible SSE2 compiled issue like similar problem with Alien Swarm preventing launch on systems with older CPU which do not support SSE2?

I've got the same 'Main Executable' error with a game called 'Fate of the World' it's a pre-release beta rather than a mod though, and it doesn't bode well that nobodies answered a way to correct this in over a month and a half D:

Yes, this game needs SSE2 -so it won't work with Athlon XP's, despite the fact that technically your computer is more than capable of running such a game.

Any way I can work around or will I have to scrap/try for a re-fund?

I'd go with the latter seeing as how you purchased it before they updated the system reqs. to indicate the need for SSE2-capability after you had purchased it.
