New build hints and tips?
I'm going to be purchasing all of these parts today or tomorrow, could anyone just give them a quick look over and give me and advice? Also, don't worry about a graphics card, I'll be waiting for a GTX580.
*Components: Intel Core i7 950 - $ 325 Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5 Motherboard Rev2 - $ 359 Corsair HX3X12G1600C9 12GB (6x2GB) DDR3 - $ 294 Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB WD1002FAEX x2 - $ 218 OCZ Fatal1ty Series 750W Modular - $ 139 Pioneer DVR-218L DVDRW OEM - $ 39 ASUS PCE-N13 802.11 Wireless N PCI-Express Adapter - $ 42 Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit OEM - $ 119 Antec Nine Hundred Two Case - $ 135 *Case & Lighting: CoolerMaster MegaFlow 200 Red - $ 35 CoolerMaster 120mm Silent Red LED Fan x3 - $ 45 Bitspower UV Reactive Cable Sleeve Kit Red - $ 6.50 Bitspower Dual 30cm Cold Cathode Kit UV - $ 19 Bitspower Dual 30cm Cold Cathode Kit Red/Orange - $ 19 Lamptron Sound Sensitive Module - $ 6.50 *Cooling: Noctua NH-D14 CPU Cooler - $ 108 Lamptron FC5 V2 Fan Controller - $ 79 Also, I live in Australia, so ignore the excessively high prices. I'll be buying everything from pccasegear.com.au, sorry I don't have time to link everything. The four fans are also to replace the case's stock ones as I would like a red colour scheme. Also wondering if its possible and how easy it would be to set up a RAID 0 on the UD5? Thanks for your help

I'm mainly going 12GB because its only $100 more than 6, and if ever in the future I decide to change what I use the PC for, it will (hopefully) have enough memory. I am buying from Case Gear though, as all of my mates have bought from there previously and they have been excellent especially for warranty returns, so the slight price premium is worth it IMO.

If this is for gaming (and not photoshop/video editing/matlab) then I see no reason for this to be on a n i7-950 over an i5-760.
Would be a lot cheaper and faster too, only downside would be you'd want to use only a single-GPU with the i5 to keep costs down. |

There site's sux a lil, I usually get my stuff from MSY: http://msy.com.au/ Id start with 6Gb ram and Get more later price's are sure to come down a lil more. The strong OZ dollar has been great for lowering prices too A great time to purchase.. If you have a store near you they are excellent and a lil cheaper in some case's MSY price list/store location here: http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf Last edited by borg_7_of_9: 11-07-2010 at 03:52 PM. |

Thanks for the advice guys, you talked me back down to 6GB :P. One last thing, does anyone have the internal dimensions of an Antec 902? I can't find them anywhere and would like to know the room I have for a video card. Also setting up a RAID 0, easy? Would I need to buy anything extra?
Cheers. |

Oh god now they have you raiding mechanical hard drives? Take the money you would spend on the second HD and use it for an SSD. Raid0 is very minimal in terms of performance on desktop as you're just not copying multiple gigabyte files all that often. Raid0 is basically not worth it unless you have a specific need as well as a dedicated backup to cover the increased failure rate.
I'm still quite serious that if you're only using one GPU an i5-760 based build would be faster and less expensive. http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...ducts_id=14941 http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...ducts_id=13173 Only 4GB of ram. That's 365$ saved for a faster gaming setup. Look at the gaming benchmarks (and these are with the i5 being the slower i5-750!) http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/100?vs=109, the i5-760 is always faster than the i7 in games. And for almost 400$ less it's a no-brainer as that money could be put on an SSD/better GPU/savings. Notice the i7 in these benches is clocked 25% higher than the i5 but has roughly the same performance in games. No matter what you do, that Corsair ram sucks (high voltage). http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...ducts_id=13601 is much better for 4GB, or get a comparable 1600mhz 1.5 volt kit if you're not going to go for the i5 for some reason.
