Let's just say this. If Steam didn't have a Black Friday sale, that'd be the biggest surprise since Portal 2 being announced for PS3.

Gamestops idea of a sale is an advertisement with the same prices they have all year.

Steam will almost certainly have a sale. Last year, I believe it started Nov. 26th and lasted 5 days.

That will only be a fraction of the usual massive December holiday sale.

I don't remember very well but according to this site they had the THQ and Lucasarts packs for 50USD, plus they also put sales for GRID and Osmos

up to now valve understood they were a global service and that it would not be smart to trow too much americana around.

I would hate getting a deal that is called a black friday deal , they can offer something but they just need to be carefull what they call it.

lets keep it about gaming and not force your local habits on the rest of us.

I could care less how it's called, if the deals are worldwide, I'm in!

Couldn't care less. An ironically American mistake.

And here I was thinking it was Americans who bothered being grammar sticklers when all involved know what was meant. Paradigms shifted, then.

Anyway, I'll be 'camp'ing at Best Buy this year (a first), so I hope there's no "Lightning Deals" shenanigans going on while I'm out.

Since when was Black Friday considered "Americana"? Make no mistake, we're a consumer culture (and quite aware of it), but the term "Americana" is usually used for, like, Elvis and baseball and apple pie and the Statue of Liberty, and the sales on the day after Thanksgiving are usually not the first thing that comes to people's minds when they hear the word.

If they do use the name "Black Friday" for any hypothetical sales or promotions, I wouldn't exactly say that using an informal name for a sales tradition is "forcing local habits" on anyone. You talk about it (and remember, we are talking about a sales event on video games, here) as though it were some sort cultural imperialism. Isn't that just a bit over-sensitive?

If you want to "keep it about gaming," then you shouldn't be so concerned about what sales are called. I mean, heck, what if I reject all of the holidays that take place around this time of year? I'm still not going to get upset about them having something called the "Holiday Sale," just because I don't like the holidays that are going on. On the contrary, I'll be quite happy to be buying some games on the cheap, and too busy to get all caught up in the name.

And sooner or later, you have to come to terms with the fact that, well, yeah, these holidays and traditions (Christmas, Hanukkah, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, etc), and the gift-buying-and-giving traditions they entail, are the reason these sales are happening in the first place, so, maybe getting all upset about some perceived cultural imperialism in the form of a simple informal name is kind of silly, wouldn't you say?
