"Recommended for you" worthless?

Hi,
is it just me or does "Recommended for you" just give you games which aren't your taste (or just bad)?
I was really interested in this feature (not to find more games but more in a what can you do with such data way" ) and immo its jsut useless or even insulting for me. Half the time I got a suggestion I just went "Are you kidding me recommending this to me??". The other half it was some DLC crap I already had (when it was in a pack with the game) or definite will not buy (I will never ever pay for dlc, yeah I know I said I have some already but as I said, it was bundled with the game already).
So I am just curious (is this the right English term? Not quite sure), has anyone got some interesting suggestions which fit his or her taste?

Use your wish list.

It showed one of my games that i wanted when it was 75% off.

Completely useless for me so far. Lara Croft? Batman? Ugh.

I get what you're saying. My problem is, most of the games I play are a little dated (CS:S, TF2, Q3, UT2k4) and the games it recommends are old shooters. But with these deals going, I'm finding myself trying some of the older games out

@Leinad177
Yeah, it shows stuff from my wishlist, sometimes.
But that is something easily done.

What I am interested in is "Can you successfully cross-reference game lists to make good assumptions for some other player?" and up to now it seems it can't ^^

Well keep the comments coming, maybe there are some who got some good suggestions!

I have Magic the Gathering. That game has 'dlc' that unlock a deck or make the cards shiny. Decks can be unlocked by playing in game and I have no intention of ever paying for an unlock or shiny cards.

Guess what half of my recommendations are...

I'd hate to think what's happening to a Railworks owner.

That's scary. *shiver*

Anyway, my recommendation list keeps giving me games that are in my wishlist. If a game is in my wishlist I don't need Steam to recommend it to me.
But if there's something you don't want just click on "Remove" and refresh. Something new will be there.

Yep it's worthless .. It just recommend games that are on sale, new releases, reiterating your wish list,etc,etc.. IT's basically steams technique to get even more sales.. ineffective if you have a brain (or a clever spender)

I believe it needs work, it's not really worthless. Even Amazons recommendation system isn't perfect.. I've got some strange things recommended in the past there.

I wish the recommendations (or mine anyways) was based on the games that I've put the most hours into, and not the games I've played in the past 2 weeks. The past 2 weeks I've only played 1 puzzle game and thus every single one of my recommendations is a puzzle game.

Recommends GTA EFLC

Yea.. right a First person zombie co-op shooter has everything to do with a sandbox game.

It's only good if your friends recommend things.

A friend of mine recommended Black Ops. Needless to say, he is no longer my friend. That isn't the answer, especially when everyone is just recommending TF2 and games that they've just bought.
