How much bandwidth does steam use?

I'm getting dl and upload totals of 1-2gb everyday, which makes no sense to me as that's how much I had on COD mw2 when playing 3 hours a day.\

EDIT: I mean it's always connected to the net right? is that alot of bandwidth? I'm not playing too much online. maybe half an hour of tf2

Steam only uses your bandwidth, when it's either updating a game, updating itself, or when you are playing an online game.

I don't know how much bandwidth it uses when it sits idle, but I bet it's not much.

Are you the only one who uses a computer? Maybe another family member is sharing your Internet connection.
