Nation Red Won't Launch (Solved - Please keep DirectX up to date)

I haven't updated in a while, but after the last one, Nation Red won't start at all. I click play and the "Preparing to launch Nation Red" dialog comes up, then after a few seconds disappears but nothing ever happens. I checked the running processes and it's definitely not doing anything.

I'm on Windows XP; video is XFX GeForce 7600GT and I think it's up to date. Nation Red has always worked before (but again, I haven't updated in quite a while so who knows which update caused the problem)

Hello Asbestos Bill,

The latest version of Nation Red actually uses a newer version of DirectX

Since the game ran before, you're likely just missing some of the newer DirectX components.

Google for the latest drivers:

microsoft directx redistributable november 2010

and install this package.

Also make sure you have the Microsoft Redistributable packages, although almost all games use these so you probably already have them:

Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package

and:

Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package

Got a new computer and this worked for me, thanks!

Hm. I installed the DX update and restarted, but nothing changed.

Also, did you mean to label both of those as Visual C++ packages?

Hello Astestos Bill,

When you say 'you haven't updated in quite a while', does this mean two months, six months, longer? Just to be sure: you do have the PhysX drivers installed, right? We switched over to PhysX a long time ago.

Make sure you install these as described in the sticky. If your game still doesn't start, try running it from Windows Explorer directly (double clicking nationred.exe in the Steam directory, usually C:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\nation red) to see what kind of error it shows.

You're definitely missing some dlls if the game ran fine before.

I think the last time I played was just after online co-op was introduced.

[Edit] PhysX was up to date, but the video card drivers were not. Updating now...

Ran from .exe; error: "This application has failed to start because d3dx9_42.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

With Steam, re-installing will probably entail re-downloading, right? Can I avoid that? My internet is really slow... >.>

Thanks for your help thus far, btw

Steam fixed that problem for people with slow internet.

1. Right click your Nation Red in Steam's library.
2. Select Properties
3. Select the Tab "Local Files"
4. Select "Verify Integrity of Game Cache"
5. Wait until done and try to play.

Hope I helped

*Edit*

I forgot, you can also google the dll's names and they all will definitely be there, available for download.

http://www.dll4free.com/d3dx9_42.dll.html for the one dll you mentioned.

However, I don't think it's appropriate to do that because if the DLL is missing, something else might be missing too!

Hello Asbestos Bill,

Well you just confirmed that it is DirectX all along

As you can see from the name, d3dx9 dlls are part of DirectX9.

Did you really correctly install the latest DirectX version (Google for: DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer) because if you don't have DirectX installed, the game won't run.

Don't go downloading individual dlls from the web. If Steam doesn't update DirectX for you, the only safe way to update DirectX is from the Microsoft website.

I had no idea it was necessarily related to DirectX.
When a DLL is missing I make a steam check any way.
Doesn't steam install the DirectX required for the game?
