Kingdoms expansion not launching

I purchased the Kingdoms expansion this morning. I attempted to install and play the Third Age mod, but it would tell me that "Total War encountered an unspecified error and will now close," or something like that.

After giving up on the Third Age, I decided I'd try playing regular Kingdoms. At first it launched perfectly fine, but the second time I tried to launch it, I got the "Steam preparing to launch Medieval II: Total War Kingdoms" pop up, which then disappeared. Nothing happens after that, but when I go to my friends list it says that I am in game, even though task manager shows no game running.

Does anybody have any idea what is going on, or a way to fix it? If so, I'd be extremely grateful.
