Unofficial Saints Row 2 PC FAQ

Saints Row 2 PC FAQ by IdolNinja

Is there a fix for Saints Row 2 crashing on startup?

The settings.dat file is often the culprit and can be found in your saves directory:
C:\Users\[profile name]\AppData\Local\THQ\Saints Row 2\settings.dat

A few things you can try:

* Add the following parameter to startup to force the game to start with default settings:
defaults

* Delete the existing settings.dat and the game will recreate a fresh one when you next run it. This file only contains your video and audio settings like resolution, draw distance, volume, etc.

* You can download a windowed 800x600 settings.dat here:
http://idolninja.saintsrowmods.com/s...t_windowed.rar
Often, SR2 crashes fullscreen, and needs to be run windowed first. After the first time run successfully, you should be able to switch it back to fullscreen in the video options without an issue.

The settings.dat didn't work! Is there anything else I can try?

A few additional troubleshooting steps you can take are:

* Verify intergrity of the game cache on Steam. You can get to this option by right clicking Saints Row 2 in your game library, and selecting Properties -> Local Files -> Verify integrity of game cache

* Remove or disable all non-essential usb devices. Sometimes the game mistakenly identifies a usb device as a controller which can cause a crash.

* Temporarily disable your 2nd monitor

* Change the way the game launches:
Find the SR2 executable in windows explorer
..\steam\steamapps\common\saints row 2\SR2_pc.exe
Right-click on the file, and select Properties.
on the Compatibility tab, run the program in compatibility mode for Windows XP.
Also, "disable visual themes", and "disable desktop composition" options.

* One user has reported that unchecking the Disable all enhancements option in their speaker properties fixed the crashing:
Control Panel -> Sound -> Speakers -> Properties -> Enhancements -> Disable all enhancements
http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/3074/sr2speakers.jpg

This fix might be related to surround sound since Red Faction Guerilla (built on the SR2 engine) had issues running in surround for some hardware and had to be set to stereo. More info needed.

* Some users have reported that changing the language fixes a bug where the loading screen gets to 60% and then crashes.

Why is my game crashing when I try to load a save?

Crashing on save load is an indication of save corruption, or as a result adding or removing mods. The best way to avoid this is to save manually in a new slot after every mission so you can go back to a previous save in the event that it corrupts. This is important to do even with the original vanilla game. Also, be careful if you use any mods since saves are usually not compatible if you change/remove them.

Why is the game crashing when I start a new game?

Crashing on new game usually indicates a problem with Direct X since the crash happens as soon as the opening cutscene is triggered.

Some things to try:

* Update your Direct X libraries to the latest
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

* Run Saints Row 2 windowed instead of fullscreen. Oddly enough it seems much more stable this way.

* If you are using Powertools (more on this tool later in the FAQ,) confirm that you are running the encrypted Steam exe. Powertools will only work correctly with this version and not with anything else like the Games for Windows Live non-Steam release, the German censored release, or any illegal cracked versions of the exe.

NOTE: The German version is heavily censored and will likely crash with anything other than the plain vanilla release. You will not be able to use some mods (like Gentlemen of the Row,) or Powertools.

How do I fix the menu selection automatically scrolling through the options at fast speed?

Saints Row 2 has this issue with certain USB devices which it mistakenly thinks are game controllers. The first thing to try is to unplug all USB devices except your keyboard and mouse and see if that fixes it. Also, certain Saitek keyboards install their own HID-Compliant Game Controller entry in Device Manager to enable extra functionality like keystroke macros. Temporarily disabling this device in device manager could also fix the issue.

The Ronin Mission at the airport (Orange Threat Level) crashes after the middle cutscene plays!

This is a known issue with the PC port. To get past this issue you can:

* Skip the cutscene

* Use the Gentlemen of the Row mod which fixes this and other mission scripting issues (more on this in the modding section of the FAQ)

* Download the standalone fix and compile your own patch.vpp_pc using Minimaul's modding tools (more on these tools in the modding section)
http://idolninja.saintsrowmods.com/s..._IdolNinja.rar

The Samedi mission loading the van with drugs (Riot Control) is bugged in coop and Shaundi is missing! How can I beat it in coop?

This is a known issue with all versions of the game and cannot be beaten in coop unless you get very lucky and the mission initializes correctly at that point. To get past this issue you can:

* Keep trying over and over restarting the mission until it finally works.

* Complete it solo instead of coop, and then continue on with your friend afterward.

NOTE: bbcisdabomb posted the following fix in the SR2 thread on the Something Awful forums:
"Actually, that's wrong. Blow Shaundi away before the cutscene, skip it, then revive her. Works every time."
http://forums.somethingawful.com/sho...#post388915343

The above fix shooting Shaundi is untested. Feedback is appreciated!

How can I fix Saints Row 2 running too fast at 1.5x speed?

IMPORTANT! Many players have reported that the speedup bug is now fixed with Windows 8, and Minimaul confirmed it as well on his test box! DO NOT USE POWERTOOLS OR CHEAT ENGINE IF YOU HAVE WINDOWS 8!

The speedup bug is something that is an inherent problem with Windows 7, though in rare cases it has been reported to happen on Vista. The speedup happens with CPUs that do not run at exactly 3.2Ghz frequency (the Xbox 360 cpu speed.) The further your cpu is away from 3.2Ghz (both higher and lower) the faster it will run.

There are two tools that can fix the issue:

Saints Row Powertools was developed by Rafael Rivera and IdolNinja specifically to fix this speedup issue and is the preferred solution since it does not desync cutscene audio. It also has many features for modders like print_debug support, realtime coordinate display, and logging:
http://saintsrowpowertools.com

You may want to give the new beta of Powertools a try that attempts to automatically calculate the timescale so you can avoid the stopwatch test. It seems to work correctly for about half the people who try it. If it does not you can still set a manual value in the ini like the old version:
http://saintsrowpowertools.com/oldbeta/beta.html

NOTE: Powertools will only work correctly with the encrypted Steam exe.

Cheat Engine is a general purpose tool that can also slow down Saints Row 2, but has the side effect of desync'ing cutscene audio. It should be used for anything other than the encrypted Steam release:
http://www.cheatengine.org/

How do I make Powertools work?

* Download the archive from:
http://saintsrowpowertools.com

* Extract the contents into your Saints Row 2 install directory where the SR2_PC.exe resides

* Right click on install.cmd and choose to Run as Administrator to install it.

* Edit the Powertools.ini and set your speed value at the end of the file
percentage = 1.0 is the default and results in no change
percentage = 0.78 would be running the game at 78% the speed

How do I know what slowdown value to use for Powertools?

Every CPU is different, and is influenced by many factors like overclocking, speed-step, etc, so there is no easy answer regarding a value to use. There is a stopwatch test to tweak the value though which will let you get as close as possible:
http://idolninja.saintsrowmods.com/s..._Test_v1.2.rar

NOTE: The closer you can get the game running to the correct speed, the smoother it will run.

Powertools is crashing the game at cutscenes! Is there anything I can do?

Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

* Update your Direct X libraries to the latest and greatest
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

* Verify integrity on Steam

* Run Saints Row 2 windowed instead of fullscreen. Oddly enough it seems much more stable this way.

* Confirm that you are running the encrypted Steam exe. Powertools will only work correctly with this version and not with anything else like the Games for Windows Live non-Steam release, the German censored release, or any illegal cracked versions of the exe.

There is a bunch of weird text in the top left of my screen. How do I get rid of it?

It is likely that the OSD (On Screen Display) for Powertools was accidentally activated which contains game info helpful to modders. This OSD can be toggled on and off with the Scroll Lock key.

Is there anything I can do to fix the stuttering and lagging while driving?

The biggest issue with the PC port of Saints Row 2 is how the engine streams data from the hard drive into memory and how it prefetches (or more correctly, doesn't.)

The prefetching is the thing that tends to throw everyone because it can adversely affect people with optimal hardware that should be able to run the game well. So, you start seeing wild rumors flying around from everyone on what hardware can and can't run it well, as if it's a crapshoot. It's not, and I'll get to some ways to fix that lag in after I go over basic hardware requirements.

HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS

These are some minimum requirements to get ~30fps with 1920x1200 and most everything maxed with some dips to maybe 25fps during really fast driving:
Core 2 Duo 3Ghz
ATI 4850 w/512 video memory
3GB RAM with Windows 7 (4GB RAM under Vista)
7200rpm hard drive with <4ms seek

OS:
XP will never run the game well because it can't prefetch. Vista runs it okay and you won't have to worry about speedup issues. Windows 7 performance is the best, but you'll also need to use the Powertools we released if your CPU frequency isn't exactly 3.2Ghz (the xbox 360 cpu speed.)
http://saintsrowpowertools.com

The biggest thing you can do to help SR2 performance is to give it as much RAM as you can. We're talking at least 2.5Gb free memory not being prefetched by other applications.

WINDOWS PREFETCHING BASICS:

The way Windows prefetching works is that Windows continually gathers data about your usage as you use your PC, and is constantly swapping applications in and out of memory trying to predict (or prefetch) the apps that it thinks you might need, before you even use them. That way they are already in memory and load instantly instead of loading them off the hard drive which is much slower.

Any app or game that you run should result in Windows giving that app all the memory it needs. So, it should (and does) unload other things it had prefetched, and give the new app all the memory it needs. This is the way every app normally works except SR2. For some reason with SR2, the OS will not give up any of the prefetched memory in use by other apps. SR2 will also sometimes fail to even create a .pf file and not prefetch at all if the memory is full.

STEPS TO MINIMIZE/ELIMINATE DRIVING LAG:

* Delete the contents of c:\windows\prefetch\
This will remove all the .pf files for all apps that Windows has learned and created over time. By doing so, Windows will no longer prefetch them into memory until it relearns that behavior.
* Reboot
* Make sure you have all other unnecessary applications and processes closed/ended like web browsers, background tasks, etc.
* Run Saints Row 2 and check the prefetch folder to make sure Windows created SR2_PC.EXE[SOME#s].pf

The above fix should not work that way, yet somehow does. This has worked for hundreds of players I have helped. I can't even begin to fathom how the developers found a way to get Windows to ignore its standard prefetching, but I guess there's a reason that this game has a reputation for being the worst port in the history of gaming.

NOTE: After clearing the contents of prefetch, the first few times Windows boots or loads a new app, it may initially load slightly slower until it relearns and starts prefetching. Most people don't even notice it though with high end hardware like recommended earlier.

One other performance note... The Powertools release mentioned above allows you to slow down the game to fix the Windows 7 speedup issue. The interesting thing is that the closer you can get the speed to mirror the actual 360 cpu frequency speed, the smoother the game will run.

Slightly lower hardware than the specs mentioned earlier are probably workable. It just means you'll have to run it at a lower resolution and maybe turn down some graphic settings like Motion Blur, AA, or Dynamic Lighting.

What controllers are supported?

Only the 360 controller is officially supported. Other controllers do not map correctly and will often cause problems with the menu options continuously scrolling on their own as if a directional keypress was held down.

A PS3 controller can be used, but you will need to make it emulate a 360 controller for it to work right:

* Install the latest MotionJoy software:
http://www.motioninjoy.com

* Download the XBOX360 Controller Emulator v3.0
http://www.tocaedit.com/IB/index.php...ads&showfile=4

* Extract the downloaded archive for the emulator above and copy the following 2 files to your Saints Row 2 install directory where the sr2_pc.exe resides:
xbox360cemu.ini
xinput1_3.dll

How can I make the driving controls with keyboard and mouse not be an oversensitive mess?

The short answer is to use a 360 controller. The long answer is to download the handling mod:
http://www.moddb.com/mods/saints-row-2-handling-mod

Some users have reported that the handling mod makes all vehicles handle the same and also causes serious AI driving issues which result in the npcs not being able to turn successfully. Many players swear by it though, so YMMV.

How do I change the in-game prompts to be my 360/PS3 controller buttons instead of keyboard keys?

You can either:

* Download the Gentlemen of the Row mod which has 360 and PS3 onscreen builds:
http://idolninja.com

* Download the standalone 360/PS3 onscreen mod and compile your own patch.vpp_pc using Minimaul's modding tools (more on these tools in the modding section)
http://idolninja.saintsrowmods.com/s...nnocentSam.rar
or
http://idolninja.saintsrowmods.com/s..._Megacherv.rar

Why can't I see my friends' coop games?

Different Saints Row 2 patch levels cannot see each other's games in Gamespy and cannot play together. For example, if you have the Steam release patched to the final 1.2, you will not be able to play with a user of the Games for Windows Live release which is still at 1.1. Check the end of the FAQ for more info on the different releases and versions of Saints Row 2.

Why does it timeout when I try to connect to a coop game?

Saints Row 2 needs to have the following port open/forwarded for both the host and client:
4200 TCP and UDP

Just opening port 4200 works for most people. If it still time's out try disabling your Hamachi virtual network adapter and/or opening the following ports both TCP and UDP:
* 27900 (Master Server UDP Heartbeat)
* 28900 (Master Server List Request)
* 29900 (GP Connection Manager)
* 29901 (GP Search Manager)
* 13139 (Custom UDP Pings)
* 6500 (Query Port)
* 4200 (Game)

If it still doesn't work, try hosting a non-password protected game. Oddly enough, this seems to work for some people when everything else fails.

Why does the Multiplayer lobby for Gangsta Brawl and Strong Arm modes boot people out when others join?

The network code for Saints Row 2 is extremely sensitive and when coupled with the speed and timing issues of the game it results in many people not being able to play together since it forcibly disconnects certain users when others join. It is almost impossible to get a full game going with friends because of this and SR2 PC multiplayer is considered inherently broken (except coop which works great.)

I bought sr2 and it's in the wrong language! Does the game have multi-language support?

Yes and no. Some regions like the Czech release have all languages files present in the game, while others like the US release only have English. There are a few different ways you can get it working though.

* Use the Gentlemen of the Row mod which has multi-language support, bugfixes, and additions (more info in the modding section.)

* Download a custom patch.vpp_pc with all language files present. This is for the plain vanilla version without any kind of mods:
http://idolninja.saintsrowmods.com/s...ge_support.rar

* Force the language with the following startup parameters (only works if the language files are already present.)
forcelang_en - force language to English
forcelang_de - force language to German
forcelang_fr - force language to French
forcelang_es - force language to Spanish
forcelang_it - force language to Italian
forcelang_nl - force language to Dutch
forcelang_se - force language to Swedish
forcelang_dk - force language to Danish
forcelang_pl - force language to Polish
forcelang_cz - force language to Czech
forcelang_ru - force language to Russian
forcelang_ch - force language to Chinese
forcelang_jp - force language to Japanese

I bought the German version and nothing works! What can I do?

The German version is extremely censored and thus incompatible with almost every mod, fix, or tool outlined in this FAQ. It has been confirmed that German players can activate uncensored keys from other regions on their Steam account to get past this.

IMPORTANT: The previous issues with Gamersgate keys being the censored German version have been corrected. All new sales from them are for the uncensored english version. If you previously bought SR2 from Gamersgate, simply login to their site with your account and get your new key that will register correctly on Steam.

My in-game sound is in mono or only coming out one speaker?

There are a few fixes for this suggested by the community:

My stats show that I did x amount of holdups, hostage diversions, etc, but I didn't get the unlocks?

Stat tracking in the game is a little weird. Your profile.dat file located in the saves directory stores running totals for ALL gameplay. The menu polls data from that file rather than your save. So, if you were to successfully complete a hostage diversion it would immediately add one to your stats, even if the game crashed right after and you didn't save. In that case your stats would say 1 hostage taken, but your save wouldn't have any successfully completed. Because of how it is setup, the stats also track all your previously done diversions from other characters too which can be misleading.

The answer is almost always to just keep on doing x diversion until it unlocks what it's supposed to.

My No Fall Damage unlock stopped working! Is there any way I can fix it?

There is a bug in all versions of the game where the Low Gravity Cheat will permanently screw up your No Fall Damage unlock if you save the game after activating it.

There is a way to hex edit your save and correct it on the PC version:
http://idolninja.com/blog/?p=185

IMPORTANT: Never save after using the Low Gravity cheat to prevent this from happening!

Is there a list of unlocks/phone numbers?

The Penny Arcade Saints Row 2 thread has a wealth of info in the OP concerning unlocks and other game info:
http://forums.penny-arcade.com/showthread.php?t=100919

How do cheats work and why can they screw up my game?

When you activate one of the cheats from the cheat menu in-game, it does the following:

* Turns off autosaving

* Flags your current game session so that any FUTURE saves IN THIS SESSION will cause the save to be flagged.

So, you can safely load your saved game, activate the cheat, mess around and have fun, and then EXIT WITHOUT SAVING, and you'll be fine. Your current save will not be flagged.

NOTE: If someone joins your game and their save is a cheat flagged save, it immediately flags the SESSION you are playing and disables your autosave. DO NOT SAVE YOUR GAME AFTER THIS HAPPENS OR YOUR SAVE WILL ALSO BE SAVED AS A CHEAT SAVE AND YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GET CERTAIN STATISTIC BASED UNLOCKS!

Is there DLC for the PC release?

No, and there never will be any official DLC on PC as per Volition on their official forums. Volition has also announced that there will be no further patches or support for the PC version.
http://community.saintsrow.com

Are there are any mods for Saints Row 2?

The most popular mod for Saints Row 2 is Gentlemen of the Row and offers 100+ new clothing items with 80+ new logos, improved weather including a darker nighttime and more vibrant colors in daytime, plane and boat mechanics for customizing, additional missions, new vehicle dealerships, new weapons, new cribs, new homies and gang styles, new taunts and compliments, new walking styles, 100+ new ambient music tracks for purchase, more car paints, more skin colors, tattoos, makeup, optional 360/PS3 onscreen prompts, a ton of new cheats including NPC morphs, and tons of tweaks and bug fixes.

Where is the best place to buy Saints Row 2, and are there any differences between releases?

First of all, you will absolutely need the Steam release to get the latest patch of 1.2, as it is only available that way. Any other release is still at 1.1 which has serious performance, AI, coop, and resolution problems.

IMPORTANT: THE GERMAN VERSION OF SAINTS ROW 2 IS HEAVILY CENSORED AND WILL NOT WORK WITH MOST OF THE MODS AND TOOLS!

* Buy it on Steam
http://store.steampowered.com/app/9480/

* Buy it from Amazon
http://www.amazon.com/Saints-Row-2-Pc/dp/B0016Q4UJE
Amazon has the retail boxed Saints Row 2 PC for $6 and some change. The retail boxed is steamworks and installs right on Steam. In fact, you can plug in the key from the manual right into Steam and activate it that way:

Amazon also offers a digital download version of SR2. While slightly more expensive than boxed, this option also gives you a key that you can use to activate on Steam so you can avoid shipping charges and get the game immediately.

* Direct 2 Drive digital download
http://www.direct2drive.com/6474/pro...Row-2-Download
The D2D digital download is 1.1, but they also give you a key that you can activate on Steam. Definitely avoid the crippled 1.1 d2d version and just plug the key right in to Steam to activate.

* Gamersgate
http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-SAINTS2/saints-row-2
As of Aug 2011, Gamersgate keys now register correctly on Steam. They are now for the uncut English version and not the horribly butchered and censored German version. If you previously bought a key from Gamersgate, simply login to their site to get your new correct key. If you have previously installed the German version on Steam you may need to contact Steam support to have them remove it first before entering your new English key.

Problem releases of the game to avoid:
Games for Windows Live digital download - 1.1 patch level
Pirated/cracked versions - 1.1 patch level and you'll be haunted with recurring feelings of shame and regret

Sticky please!!!

Also, the game wouldn't start for me, but on steam, right click -> properties ->local files -> verify integrity of file cache

fixed my issues... hope this helps... Also, many many thanks for Powertools, this made the game playable, this is one of the most fun games I've played in a long while!

After all the work putting the faq together I can't believe I forgot the most important troubleshooting step of verifying integrity. I've updated the OP with that info. Thanks!

EDIT:
I messaged a moderator yesterday about turning this into a sticky but haven't heard anything back yet.

I have a question, why don't you work for Volition? The dedication I've seen you give this game as well as knowledge-ability for its inner workings and design are far above and beyond the vast majority of what I've seen from most fans and gamers.

At the very least, a few months before Saints Row 3 comes out I think THQ should run a beta copy of the game by you so you can "double check" it; you seem like a picture perfect QA guy (hell, we all feel like we're beta testing released PC games sometimes don't we?)

That would be neat, huh? I'm not sure if I would take that even if it was offered though. I have my own original projects in the works that I'm hoping to announce sometime soon on my site.

In all honesty, I'm a fan just like the rest of you guys. I just really love the game and think it would be a shame if more people weren't able to enjoy it.

why?

A few questions:
After how i read the powertools is some sort of a modding of the game? I would like to make it more playable, not to change the gameplay.
Why cant the game be patched (updated) via steam?
Is there going to be any patch soon?

I would like to play this game normally, because until now it lagged when running or riding a bike, etc, except when i look the ground. But that way is unplayable.
I am not very willing to use the powertools and neither deleting the prefetched folder in windows.

My game right now is on minimal 1400x900, lagging, colors look pale, and very lagging.
PC: ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT (i think), AMD Athlon 64 dual core 3800+ 2 GHz processor, 3 GB RAM, Windows 7 . (i think it should be enough)

Thank you.

Thank you.
You are incorrect on many counts.

Powertools does not mod the gameplay at all. It simply slows down the game to fix the Windows 7 speedup bug. It also has features like displaying information that modders can use through its OSD, but that is something a player will never ever even see unless they toggle it on with Scroll lock.

It is already patched automatically via Steam to the final v1.2 patch level. If you're asking me why Volition dropped support and will no longer patch it further then you will have to ask them.

You will never ever run Saints Row 2 well with that video card and cpu no matter what you do. The tools and performance suggestions will not help you with that low spec hardware, sorry.

I thought that the minimal requirements are:
Graphics: 128MB 3D graphics card with Shader Model 3.0 support (i.e. 7600 NVidia card or better, ATI X1300 card or better) and i think ati hd 2600 is better than x1300...

oh well, ill try to play the game this way, if not... refund may still be an option i think

thx IdolNinja, u the MAN!

Minimum requirements mean just that. The minimum hardware/software to make the game simply run, even if it's only 10 fps and considered unplayable to most gamers. It's not a guarantee that a game will run well, unfortunately.

Just wanted to say a big thanks to Idolninja for all the work you've done, I've not managed to get my SR2 working that well yet but the time and effort you've put in is fantastic and it's much appreciated.

Bit of an odd one for me, deleting the prefetch folder seems to have - for the most part - removed stuttering on fast driving moments. However, I'm having real trouble getting my speedtest to 1:43. I seem to be stuck at either 1:28 or 1:49. My current percentage is:

percentage = 0.999999970196 (which I've yet to test)

What I can tell you is that at 0.9999999701 I get 1:28, at percentage = 0.9999999702 I get 1:49. It's taken me quite some time to narrow it down that much, and I've given up for the evening but I'll keep going to see if I can find that magic number.

I'm running a Core 2 Duo e6600 which, according to measure.exe is working at:
Detected CPU speed: 2.399523ghz
Frequency Measurement: 2343769

So any suggestions are appreciated, I'm a little concerned that I'm going to keep on refining the percentage but it's never going to stop giving either 1:28 or 1:49 which is a tad irritating .

Anyhoo, once again - thanks for all your stellar work Idolninja. Top stuff.

There have been a couple of other users who reported that exact same issue and one even had that same e6600 cpu. I'm not sure why it would happen though. Minimaul had a couple of theories regarding HPET, but the other user with issues confirmed he had it turned on.

Here's our discussion on it, but sorry I don't have an answer yet:

What mobo is in your box btw?

Also, if you do find a magic value that works please let me know.
