Help - I'm stupid!

What do the numbers mean on the character screen where it shows the items you have equiped on your character (in the circle one side of the head and the shield on the other side) ? They make no sense to me.

What do the two numbers mean on the chacter picture when you are in battle? I can't work out what the relate to? (I know the bottom one is defence, but what does the number mean?)

When I level up and for example choose agility...how does that affect my character? I click on agility and there are a list of things it does but some have points against them and others don't.

Sorry for being so dense!

The character screen shows a total of all your skills and abilities.
Some of it is fluff, some is important; it kinda depends on your playstyle. If you use a barbarian and use a lot of abilities that need red mana, you will want to get your STRENGTH up (higher strength affects red mana).

Skull = damage you do when you manage to connect three skulls.
Shield = defensive rating. Higher is better.

When you level up, you can pick any of the five abilities to upgrade. If you hover your mousepointer over the ability, you will see your current value, the previous value and the next value. Each abilitiy affects a different thing ingame:

Strength affects your red mana and the skulldamage you do.
Intelligence affects your blue mana and the number of turns in the minigames you have, etc.

You can always swap around abilitypoints by visiting the priest in town if you want to experiment. (Though you might have to get to a minimum level before you can do this, I don't recall)

Most of it is pretty simple. Just play and you'll pick it up soon enough.
