i just started having the same problem 2 weeks ago...only way to get it to work is keep trying it over and over again...i find that going into the steam folder and using FalloutNV Application tends to work more then just the launcher, but still has the same problem due to they both go to the launcher...5-8 tries back to back and it generally works

Both the FO3 & NV launchers do not mix well with the game overlay. If it's really bugging you, rename the launcher to something else, then name fallout3/falloutnv.exe to falloutlauncher/falloutnvlauncher and it will bypass them. They aren't needed for every launch, and you can just run them if you need to change settings/enable mods.

Same problem since 2 weeks ago.
It's a pain, and i have to run ''Verify Integrity of game cache files'' and it always detect 1 damaged file which will re-download.

I have to try many times in order to make it work.

the bypass the launcher bit should just be a launch option in steam for all of bethesdas games. I've never met one of their launchers that worked 100%.

rep for you snapjak

Having the same issue with the launcher... deleting fallout.ini and falloutprefs.ini in C:\Users\calden\Documents\My Games\FalloutNV seems to solve it, but it just comes back next time. I'll try the rename trick; thanks.

Okay, for those that may come across this thread with this problem of it crashing on launch try this:

1. Do a search for the "FalloutNVLauncher" file on your hard dive.
2. Right click on it and select properties at the bottom of the drop down list.
3. Click the compatibility tab.
4. Select and click the box and "The Run compatibility mode for Windows 7"
5. Apply and exit.
6. Run Fallout: New Vagas.

Hopefully it should now run crash free.

This method worked for me after I started having problems with launcher crashes. Hope it helps.

Windows 7 Ultimate - 64 bit service pack 1
GeForce GTX 570 - driver: 280.26
8 gigs memory

I'm having the same issue. Going to try the fixes in this thread and see if it fixes it. Was really looking forward to playing this after I picked up a week back. Finally got some time to play it.

Guaranteed fix.

Create a shortcut to the file "MainTitle.wav" on your desktop from your root folder for new vegas.

Start this wav file, while its playing start your launcher from the steam shortcut, close the wav file.

Play this most awesome game.

Exclamation No go on the launcher (all of a sudden) for me, too.

I'm NOT finding 'FalloutNVLauncher' through the Windows 7 search function.
Also, Steam on twitter isn't exactly humming back to me...

go to your fallout new vegas folder, find the falloutnvlauncher.exe right click and select troubleshoot compatibility.

THIS! Thanks Sytto!

Alternately, what I ended up doing was just renaming the file something else. The launcher no longer crashes; the only downside being that I don't hear the music that plays with the longer launcher (no skin off my back since the launcher is usually only there for as long as it takes me to click "Play")

I had this problem yesterday when playing the game for the first time ever.

What I did, was right click on the game in Steam, and clicked Create Desktop Shortcut, then used the desktop shortcut.
