So Blizzard had a great idea with authenticators

Naturally, one of my fears with my Steam account is being VAC banned because someone hacked me. I don't have this fear with my Blizzard games because I have an authenticator. Any plans from Valve to add this to Steam?

I hope this is the right forum.

This doesn't directly affect VAC, so this should be in the Suggestions forum.
Anyway I agree 100% with this...

It wouldn't STOP all thefts, but it would definitely slow it down quite a bit IMO.

It is not. This is about Valve Anti Cheat. Not Valve Anti Hijack.

And this idea has been suggested several times in the Suggestion forum.

The chances of you getting HACKED are so miniscule, it's not even worth bothering about. Just make sure you have a firewall and antivirus, or you know what you're doing and have general common sense.

Being PHISHED on the other hand, is probably what you're concerned about. And the answer to that is simple: don't give your password away on random websites.

but its best way to protect accounts for hackers

@PcFaker, A hardware id thing wouldnt work, I.e: I go to my brothers house for the weekend, And try to use his computer to play my steam games, I have to make a support ticket to be able to use it, then it's going to take another 2 days for it to be activated on that computer by the time they do it i wouldnt even be there so HWID system wouldnt work

Any credible source to back that statement?

Isn't it a seeded and time-delayed thing? I have a hard time believing it's been reliably cracked. I mean, I guess you can steal it.

The only problem with authenticators is batteries from what I can tell.

**edit

The authenticator itself hasn't been cracked. What's happening is a hacker keylogs you, then performs a man in the middle to intercept your code and send an incorrect one to blizzard when you attempt to log in again. Your account access will be granted when the time delay kicks off and you are given a new code (Assuming it doesn't get keylogged from you as well).

Basically, if you have someone listening to your every action, then the authenticator is useless for a specific time.

USB is a bad idea, the prime feature of these tokens/authenticators is that they are not connected to the PC at all.

Also, there is only a small display for six digits that is activated for a few seconds when you press the button. I'm sure the battery will last a very long time. Longer than most of you will play WoW or similar games of this generation.

iPhone is in a meh area, since they can be actually accessed by PCs. Especially with a jailbreak which even overrides passkeys.

Or how about you make a secure password, dont share it, change it regularly & dont be an idiot by clicking the 'Fr3e Gam3z' links.

True "Hacked" accounts happen very very very very rarely. The vast majority of the hijacked accounts are through phishing or the account holder downloading shady software that steals the account info. In both of these cases the loss of the account is the fault of the account holder. Take responsibility for your own security.

Being hacked is impossible unless the hacker is a genius AND steam has very bad hacker protection.

Authenticators are not needed if you got common sense.

hey, you just need to login with your game & authenticator onto a PC with known cheats running on the background to get you VAC banned, so not giving away password/user name is not enough.
