Can anyone tell me what is in their steam.inf file?
And where this file is located?
This way i can maybe fix the error

Try Checking C:\Program Files\Steam\ Other then that, Might be in Left 4 Dead 2 C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\left4dead2

That's all I can do for now!

Can someone browse to their steamapps/common/left4dead2/left4dead2 directory and tell me what lines are in his steam.inf file?

Mine is missing, and i want to recreate it.

// NetworkVersion is the version in the wire protcol between client<->server,
// its not used for matchmaking, PatchVersion is used for that to ensure
// we don't get cross connecting to different releases. Only bump this if
// you know an incompatible change has happened to the network protocol in
// game and old demos will not work.
NetworkVersion=2.0.4.2
PatchVersion=2.0.5.9
ProductName=left4dead2
appID=550
You can recover the file by verifying cache.

I copied your quote and the error disappeared, but now i get another error:

Engine error

"could not load gameui"

Can someone send me their gameui.dll file?
it should be located in the bin folder.

Why not just verify integrity of cache? It should just create the files if they're missing.

this file seems to reside in the \SteamApps\common\left 4 dead 2 folder.

Do a game cache integrity check like other people have already suggested. If any files are missing or damaged, Steam will redownload them.

Thumbs down Update failure

This freaking problem happened on me today and I find out what's going on. It means that Steam is going to update your game but IT FAILS and doesn't try to update again.

Today I left my computer for a long time and it kept working with Internet connection. I didn't realize there was a new game update today. When I came back and wanted to join my friend's server, the game couldn't join (because my game didn't update yet) so I quit the game and tried to rejoin then "Unable to load version from steam.inf" message appeared. I had no idea why my game could run before a few seconds, but suddenly it couldn't!

HOW TO SOLVE THIS FREAKING PROBLEM? (For someone who was disturbed by this problem.)
  1. Restarting your Steam and waiting for its automatic update.
  2. If automatic update is failure (restart Steam but nothing happens), you should change your download region.
  3. Verifying integrity of game cache. (Waste the time but better than reinstall your game owing to its own fault.)

Who the hell knows that steam.inf is gone itself means UPDATE FAILURE?
This system is really suck and wasting my time. SUCK!

I had the same problem. I tried to verify the game cache, which worked (I guess), but I kept getting the same message. I then tried uninstalling the game, and now I can't find a way to reinstall it.

Not looking good for us right now.
