Retail Box GFWL? Digital Download Steamworks?

So I was about to pre-order this on steam, but then I saw it was also available retail boxed (no way!), and I had a look and it was cheaper by about £5-£10 - however, it said GFWL on the retail box, so I'm just wondering if this game really is a steamworks title or just gfwl available on steam. I don't mind the GFWL bit really, it;s not a deal breaker, just a bit annoying that there's exra bits to do. I guess I coudl treat it like a game within a game.

thanks

"Game for Windows" is a diferent thing than "Game for Windows LIVE".

Look at the retail box one more time. There is no LIVE on it

No matter where you buy it you will end up playing it on steam. Only difference is price and pre-order bonus DLC.

Thankfully it's Steamworks.
We won't have to deal with the horrible bloatware GFWL.

What a relief, we'll have to deal with the horrible trojan horse Steam instead even if we purchase a boxed copy.

Truly, the difference is staggering.

What a great counter-argument. I do realize Steam fanatics in general are oblivious to its flaws and would gladly shove it down the throats of everyone - including those who'd rather avoid using it when it comes to boxed releases, but people like you are just getting annoying. Hypocrisy and fanaticism at its worst.

If you did not realize already Steamworks is basically a DRM, If its not Steam it would be one of the other ones, which by far are far worse than Steam's version. Move along.

Ok, you are not troll, you are just plain stupid...

Friggin' GFWL ed over countless people...it support 15 countries, unlike steam, which is available for whole world...

Imo steam has no flaws...before steam i pirated games, now i have 30 games in library...also, chat ingame, community options, redownload games from any place...

*Your argument is invalid

Tip: your info is outdated. If you wish to argue, at least learn to use google from time to time.
If you honestly think Steam is loved by everyone, you're sadly mistaken. GFWL has nothing to do with it.

Gonna grab a quote from another thread here

(a) is so unlikely that it isn't even worth considering. (b) is possible and I'd even say probable. Eventually.

It may be "complaining" to gripe about how terrible GFWL tends to be, but so what? The complaints are usually legitimate. Pretty much the only way any company knows that people are unhappy are via public griping. That and poor sales, but "poor sales" are usually excused as "sales lost due to piracy" or "not marketed properly" or both and it seems, somehow, DRM and crappy "experiences" like GFWL manage to escape critical scrutiny and criticism.

Steam isn't perfect either, but that is neither here nor there. Just because someone is complaining about GFWL doesn't mean they are necessarily ignoring issues that Steam causes, unless they are falsely attributing an error in Steam to an error in GFWL - a misattribution I feel you are overstating, OP.
As for my personal dislike of GFWL? I have two titles that use it (Batman AA and Red Faction Guerilla), and just under 70 that use Steam. Only Steam issues I've ever had were slow download speeds, which 9 times out of 10 is the connection on my end.
For GFWL, however, both games seem to download and update it independently with a staggeringly low rate of success that required me to manually download the client and reinstall (after ~6 restarts due to supposed updates). With Batman AA, GFWL is incapable of automatically logging me in, despite the box being checked. At the main menu of Red Faction Guerilla, GFWL client crashes, windowing the game and throwing an annoying dialogue in my face, without fail.

There are more minor nuisances than that, including the account creation process, but it really isn't worth going into detail on all that.

Maybe I'm a Steam Hammer Legion Member, but if I am it's only because of a consistently good user experience, especially when compared to the rather pathetic GFWL. The way I see it, GFWL will only succeed by either getting good or taking anticompetitive measures, and since it's run by Microsoft I'm expecting the latter.

Don't let me stop you from playing the martyr and speaking up against Steam on its own forums though, and feel free to report any grievances you have with the service here.

It's Games for Windows, not Games for Windows Live, as people have said.

However, the mock retail box images on the internet and what GameStop and the like use to represent the game in their stores, say "GFWL." Yes, they include the L. But these retail boxes aren't official. They are just some stupid crap the retail chains use to attract people's attention to games that aren't out yet.
