Yet another savegame editor

Since Johnbot published his attempt at a savegame editor, I thought it's time to give mine a try. I created it about 2 weeks after Magicka's release and kept it for private use to screw around with all the different items until now, since I didn't think anyone else would actually find it as useful.

Without further ado,

It requires .Net Framework 3.5, which comes with Magicka anyways, so there should be no need to install anything else.

I'm also providing the sourcecode, if anyone is interested to take a look at it. It should be fully documented, feel free to ask me anything if there is something unclear.

It's possible to add multiple players' loadouts to a savegame. For example, if you play with 3 other people, their items get saved of course, but if you continue later with 3 other people, the first ones still get saved. With this editor, you can edit everyone's items, add new ones or delete unused ones.

It also parses the local steam friends cache (if it's well-formed, that is. It's a json-like script inside a .vdf file, and I've had a few instances where the parentheses were screwed up...) so you can add playernames directly from your friends list.

Can't view screenshot because it redirects to http://imageshack.us/img/blocked_login.jpg. Sure as heck not going to register anything to view a screenshot.

That's strange... I uploaded them without having an account, and I've asked a few people to try the links and it worked for them.

Can't get it to work on Vista 64 ("...has stopped working").

When the tool starts, I'm parsing through the local steam friends cache for each account. It's located at ..\Steam\userdata\<Account ID>\config\localconfig.vdf. I would apreciate it if you could send me that file (or files, if there are more than 1 accounts) so I can analyse the problem. Don't worry, there isn't really any account-sensitive data in there, just friends names and their name history, just take a look in there yourself.
As I said in the first post, I've seen a few cases where the format in those files was totally screwed up, which caused the editor to fail at startup. I included several routines to avoid those corrupt .vdf files, but it seems that yours is a special case.

Do I have to place the exe in a certain location? (sorry for the noobquestion)

No, it should work anywhere. It searches for the right paths automatically.

Problem: When you click on "Magicks" to view the magicks list, view something different such as a website or a folder location. Than at the bottom, click the Savegame Editor's icon (or name) to view the program again. The Magicks pop-up is nowhere, and anything on the other form is disabled. Please fix this.

Also I have used Johnbots savedgame editor and im gonna make a list of whats good and bad between the two. Im also going to make a few suggestions to you based on the list.

Thanks for the tip! I forgot to set the owner of the dialog window, now it's behaving as it should. Retry the download link in the first post. The same problem occurred if you open the "add from steam friends list" window.

Just for fun, I also added all the staff- and weapon descriptions. If you select a weapon and hover over the weapon combobox, you get its description and damagetype/special (or passive/active ability for staffs) as a tooltip hint.
