How do I extract the contents of .vpk files? (not dir.vpk files)

I downloaded a sound mod addon file, but I actually want to extract the sound files from the addon to put the real .wav sounds into the actual Left 4 Dead 2 game. That way I could listen to my sound mods online without going to a Best Available dedicated server.

Download gcfscape or drag the addon onto vpk.exe (located at steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2\bin\, but you need to install the authoring tools to get it. Alternatively, if you have L4D1 installed, use that vpk.exe because you don't need L4D1's authoring tools, it's there by default).
