You've been told wrong. It's an update of the same engine. Source 2 is a myth.

It will probably be as demanding as L4D2, maybe a bit more, graphics-wise. If Portal runs great for you, then Portal 2 should be at least playable. If you have trouble with running Portal well, you should be concerned.

Source 2 will never ever exist. Valve upgrades the Source engine in branches, not versions.

If every branch was numbered, Portal 2's engine would be Source 6.

Same engine, with a lot of added features.

Closest iteration is Alien Swarm, since that is in-between the Left 4 Dead engine and Portal 2 Engine, so if you can run Alien Swarm fine then it's all good.

I'd honestly expect it to be less demanding. Portal 2 is probably only going to have a fraction of entities to render compared to L4D2. While it might be a heavier engine, it would require less strain to render everything.*

*Opinion, not fact

But there are liquid physics and other new elements that might be more demanding

The gels aren't liquid physics.
They're a particle system.

Exactly, imagine it like a simple dust cloud you see in many other games, just as a full 3d Model with a loop animation.

It doesn't really splatter and spill on the ground, it just disappears and places a spray on the ground where it landed.

So it shouldn't be too demanding, think it will run fine even if you let 20 of these bubbles fly around, maybe even more.
