Post Tutorial: Modify the Crazy Taxi PC Soundtrack!

HOW TO MODIFY CRAZY TAXI'S SOUNDTRACK

Here it is in action.

Files Needed:
1) Any audio converter capable of converting your songs into “.wav” files.

ADX Frontend (The files you need are below. The link on the left is just a citation.)
2) ADX Frontend Extract anywhere.
3) ADX Converter Place “adxen.exe” from the ADX Converter link into the same directory you extracted ADX Frontend.

Step 1: Convert the songs you want into a “.wav” file.

Make sure it is converted with these parameters (Also found the ADXFrontend's Help → Contents file.) I've bolded what I recommend.

Quote:
File Format: Windows PCM (*.wav) only! MP3/OGG is not currently supported
Sample Rates: 44100hz/22500hz/11250hz (48000hz and higher not supported)
Bit Rate: 16-Bit/8-Bit only (32-Bit/24-Bit not supported)
Filename Length: DOS 8.3 formatting (using spaces in your filenames will result in errors!)
Channels: Mono or Stereo (multi-channel surround audio not supported)

Step 2: Use ADX Frontend to convert each .wav song individually.

The converted files will appear in the same folder of the original song. Don't worry, nothing will be overwritten.

Step 3: Back up/Move the original songs.

These are found C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\crazy taxi\SoundData\music_adx

I recommend moving everything into a new folder in the same directory called “Original Songs”

If you don't want to hear any of the original music, you can remove them from the directory with no serious side effects in-game.

Note: As far as I know, two songs are used only in the Main Menu and Character Select. These are name_loop.adx and The_Chase.adx, respectively.

Step 4: Rename your converted songs with the names of the original song files and move them into the music_adx folder.

For example: “yourcustomsong.wav” needs to be changed to “black_radio.wav” You can have up to 14 songs in your custom soundtrack, because only 14 songs are included in the original soundtrack.

Note: I don't think the Main Menu(name_loop.adx) or the Character Select(The_Chase) songs are used in-game. So replacing these files with songs you want to hear in-game won't work. You will only hear these songs in their respective locations.

If done correctly. You will now hear these songs in-game.

Depending on the how much silence you have at the beginning and end of your songs there may be more quiet time between tracks than if you left the soundtrack alone. To combat this, before converting your songs, trim the silence before and after your songs.

------ Any Feedback? ------

I've noticed the credits and the automatic gameplay that begins after the start menu seems to want to draw from a particular song, but I'm not sure which songs they are. If someone knows, send me a PM and I'll add them next to the note about the Main Menu and the Character Select Screen.

Also, PM me if anyone knows of any easier ADX converters. This one is pretty much the first one I found, and I figured out how to use it right away, so I decided not to bother with further searching.

Finally, I'm not going to distribute a replacement soundtrack containing Crazy Taxi's original songs. I would not recommend anyone else do that in this thread either. It's illegal.

I don't have Crazy Taxi or I'd try it, but it seems to me like this needs to be stickied.

I'm more than fine with just running a media player in the background (gives me access to the original soundtrack AND other stuff I feel like mixing in) but hey this is cool for people who want it to be that simple.

AWESOME

Without Offspring, it's not the same thing. And this is what kept me from buying the game - until now

Because of the sale, I think this probably deserves a heads up for those who think the new soundtrack is a deal breaker.

... I want people to buy this collection so we can see more Dreamcast ports. :X Maybe Saturn ports too.

Great info, though I do have a question. Which song should be replaced by All I Want? It's just wrong starting the game without that "YA YA YA YA YA!"

So the Steam version of this game doesn't use the original soundtrack? LAME. I have the actual PC version that was released in 2004. I think I have the box somewhere...

What're the different config options for the Steam version in terms of graphics? I know that it's off-topic, but I'm curious, as I might shell out the few bucks for it if the Steam version has been optimized for the PC (1280x720 16:9 play, better FPS, etc).

Update: Nevermind. http://forums.steampowered.com/forum....php?t=2134717 answered my soundtrack question.

OK, so this is what I've figured out.

Replace:
"Black Radio" for "All I Want" by The Offspring
"Escape Artist" for "Ten in 2010" by Bad Religion
"Get Out" for "Them and Us" by Bad Religion
"Radical Sabbatical" for "Way Down the Line" by The Offspring

"Name Loop" for "Change The World" by The Offspring. Used in game select screen.
"The Chase" for "Hear It" by Bad Religion. Used in character select screen. (Note; create a file only using the first 20 seconds. Using the full song, which you'll never hear, caused the game to crash.)
"Flinch" for "Inner Logic" by Bad Religion. Used for end credits.
"Radiator" for "All I Want". Used for 1st demo.
"Orange Wednesday" for "Ten in 2010" by Bad Religion. Used for 2nd demo.

Remember when swapping files, use the original names of the tracks.

I found out that any song that is used in the demo's are automatically used in the games driving soundtrack so there is no need to have the songs in there twice. Looks to be the same in other versions of the game. I could be wrong but that's what I've noticed.

The ADX Frontend's site went down. I can't find a mirror for it through google. Anybody have a link for it?

Oh bugger. I'll see if I still have the program downloaded and see if I can't get it hosted.
