How to chat?

Complete noob to steam, How do I send messages during a game? How do I talk with voice instead?

There is a button called Start voice chat once you click it (and other person accepts the "call") you can talk with your microphone.

The default hotkey for game overlay is shift+tab, hold those to open the Steam Community features while you are ingame.
You can change this from Steam Settings on the In-game tab.

EDIT: accidently wrote alt instead of shift
The correct hotkey is shift+tab

Well first of you need to open a chat window with someone who you want to message of course.

There is button on the overlay to view/hide your friendlist.
Click to show friendlist and choose someone to message (double click), then just type your message and hit enter or the send button.

Just open the friends list and then pretend you're on ICQ or Live, the functionality is almost the same.

I see. I appreciate it! And to open friends list in game, what do you do?

Been playing l4d2 on xbox live forever, but most people Ik who play it, play it on steam, so decided to get the same.

Click the "Friends" string on the lower right corner of the screen when you're in a game and have opened the overlay.

And if im in full screen, how would I text chat?

There is overlay for full screen what will show all active chat windows, friendlist and has internet browser.

Read this thread all over again and try the instructions step by step, slowly, and try to find out what we mean.

If you however can't, we can post screenshots or videos to help you.

1. You open the Friends list from the link in the lower right corner
2. You doubleclick any friend in your list
3. You chat

Unless you just mean the in-game chat, in this case, you just press the apropriate button.

Check the screenshot.
The highlited (using a red pen) area is where to click to open your contact list. Like with any other IM (and the Live network), you have to have contacts to chat with them. There's also still the in-game chat.

Oo ya I just meant In - Game chat. When I do the SHift+tab overlay, i don't see anyway text fields.
