Does anyone actually like gamespy?
We aren't in 1999 anymore. Harcore gamers want to use steamworks.
Not GFWL, not gamespy, not some other crap 5% of people like. Steamworks. Are EA and Crytek stupid or something or did they just get a paycheck to stop crappy gamespy from dying? (which it should). |

Man, gamespy internet game hosting has always been horrible and it still behaves like it did 10+ years ago. It's like they've not updated their code at all in a decade. I will jump for joy the day that I stop seeing gamespy logo in every MP game intro. It's not fast, it's not stable, it's not reliable, it's not secure, and the list goes on. And it never has been. Why it's still in use is beyond me (other than it's probably cheap and for good reason given the complete lack of any support).
What makes things worse is that due to the insecurities of GS, we are forced to install and run system hog programs like PunkBuster to compensate. So we end up with a system that doesn't do anything well, consumes extra system resources making our machines work harder while getting less performance in the game (not such a big deal anymore, but in the days of Empire Earth, it was significant!), and ends up frustrating the customers using it. The only qualm I have with steamworks is the monopolistic potential it represents. If games are going to use steamworks, gamers should not be forced to use the full front end of steam. If I buy a game on Steam, sure, I should have to use steam for that game. If I buy a game retail or on a competing site, I'm generally doing so purposely to avoid using steam or some other platform. I shouldn't have to make a new steam account and be bombarded by steam advertisements to play a game I bought somewhere else. Ultimately, it reduces competition by having 3rd party games exclusive to Steam's system. Now dont get me wrong, I like steamworks system quite a bit, but I know quite a few people who dont like steam and dont want to use it just to play they purchased retail. Perhaps if there was a Steam LITE that was included in the retail version that didn't have all of the bells and whistles, but just simply allowed multiplayer for a game and didn't require a steam account to play single player, then it would be like gamespy has been for the past decade. Anyway, I too would like to see more games use steamworks. I think the system works well, but I'd also like to see the LITE version of steam in retail and competing versions of games as to not create a monopoly. |
