It's not Steam that takes up the space, it's your games. If you want to free up some space you're going to have to delete some of your games.

Edit:
You could always check to see if you have any custom maps and delete them. I have ton of custom maps for L4D2 so my L4D2 folder alone is over 20 GB.

The games you have a kept inside the steam folder, that's why it is so large.

I would suggest that you get a new HDD, they are pretty cheap now a days.
My Steam use 300GB of space and I got lots left on my 1TB HDD that Steam use.

You only have two choices.
1. Delete some of your games.
2. Get a bigger hard drive (You can get 1TB for $~50, so it's not that expensive).

I think I'm up to around 400-500GB for my Steam folder. That's with around 30 or so not even installed.

25GB? Oh man, those were the days ... I can get to 25GB with just two games installed

My Steam folder is currently sitting at about 695GB ...

Try cleaning out any dumps, logs or screen shots - it may give you back some space.

Also, some of the maps may take up a huge amount of space - you may be able to zip them up - if you don't play them often, and just unzip them when you need them.

Sorry, but that's about the best I can do!

I'm surprised that a PC old enough that it has a 75GB harddrive would be able to run L4D2 or TF2 very well at all.

I think the graphics card and/or RAM would be the deciding factor!

Go to Steam/config and delete htmlchache and overlayhtmlcache.
They never get purged by steam and may take up some considerable place.

You can use NTFS compression on some folders, but it doesn't help much. The only real way to make more space is to uninstall games.

If you use compression, you'll compromise the performance of your machine. Best advice is to go out and buy a nice new 500GB-1TB drive. They're very cheap now days. Oh and try not to get addicted to the regular sales here otherwise you'll find that even 1.5TB isn't enough.

25GB for TWO games?! You're living in the past gramps. Napoleon: Total War is almost 20GB on it's own!!
