Questions before I buy Battlefront 2 ?

I want to buy Battlefront 2 from steam, but have a few questions before I buy:

1) Does it fully support the X360 controller ?? (some games like TF2 dont fully support the X360 controller - the right stick can not be used to aim)

2) Will it work well with Windows 7 64-bit ?

3) For online multiplayer a Gamespy account is required. What is Gamespy like ? is it VAC secured ? are there any cheaters ?

4) Does Gamespy have dedicated servers ? are there servers in Europe or only US ?

5) is it easy to join a game or will I get kicked out by hosts ?

6) Will the BF2 game appear in my Steam Library ? so that I can launch the game from Steam ?

Thanks in advance.

1. Unsure, sorry.
2. It runs fine for me on 64-bit Win7.
3. All you need for Gamespy is a unique name and an email (not that they ever verify it). There is no VAC, Punkbuster, or anything similar, but there are very few actual "hacks" for the game. If you stick to dedicated clan servers you should only rarely see troublemakers, and those are usually just people going into walls or the like and can usually be dealt with by server admins.
4. As far as I know, Gamespy does not host servers. Dedicated servers can be run from any PC or purchased from an independent host.
5. As long as you check what the rules are and follow them, you shouldn't be kicked from most servers.
6. It will work as with all other Steam games.
7. The only update is the 1.1 patch, which comes preinstalled on the Steam version.
8. The DLC was only for Xbox. You can probably find mods to duplicate most of the functionality, but few play them online because they require all players in the server to download them individually.

If you have any more questions, add me at darthcrater on Steam or darthcrater1016 on Xfire.

Thanks for the reply.
I remember the DLC was released for free on the PC and you had to pay on XBL. I know one of the maps in the DLC is Bespin (cloud city). So is that map available from anywhere ? I want to play on that map.

Try the +123 v2.2 map pack - it includes most of the SWBF1 maps and more game modes to the original maps, without breaking online compatibility. You can find it on globalwf.com.

Thanks man, you mentioned dedicated clan servers, can you give me the names of a few popular ones that are always up and running ? and are there any restrictions of joining these servers ? (e.g. latency limit, etc).

I admin for the SWGO community (swgohome.com). We run a Conquest server (Jedi Battle Arena) and a Hero Assault server (imaginatively named Hero Assault). There is a ping limit (in the 300's), but no other restrictions as long as you observe the server rules.

Also check out the Gamerz community's No-force FFA server for a different Hero Assault ruleset (enforced through some clever server-side modding - no download needed), or any of a few other infantry servers (Merc, SP, SOTG) that are usually populated. All these are US servers; I can't name any popular European servers at the moment. Our community does have many players from across Europe, however.

I too am thinking about purchasing this game. Had it on my PS2 when it still worked but never had the PS2 online thing. What's the current player base like? Still plenty of servers? Is there a demo anywhere that I can use to try before I buy? Also, does it work well with mouse and keyboard?

Thanks.

The player base has dropped somewhat, but in my experience you can always find a populated server. As far as I know, no demo was ever released. The game works at least as well (many would argue better) with mouse and keyboard.

No demo released.. but there was a beta. They gave us 3 maps to play on. Even if you could find the beta, it's doubtful it'd work because it was multiplayer only and I couldn't say what Gamespy has done to update their network since the release of the actual game... so I'm betting the beta wouldn't work if you could find it.

Game works well with keyboard, mouse, gamepad, flight stick. Crater's right, there's always a bunch of populated servers. The problem I usually find is finding a server with the settings I like. Friendly fire on, no bots, usually conquest with Heroes off. I usually have better luck finding servers like that on weekend nights... but there are populated servers any night.

Global Warfighter League still has a following in SWBF2, and while competition for the game has fallen over the years, we still have ladders and matches happening, with the occasional GWL community GameNight.

When you get the game, feel free to join the GWL Steam Group and hook up with some players that are playing the game (and may also be looking for a match).

This thread is a couple months old, but I thought I'd comment for anybody else that has a similar question:

The GamePad support in Battlefront II is better than in any other game I have ever played. It works perfectly with a wired 360 controller, picks up all the axises (axi?) and makes space combat insanely fun.
