Will you get VAC banned for having Cheat Engine...

...but not using it with any games that use VAC?

You may get banned if it is running as a process and/or in tray, yes.

What if I don't have any games running, just steam?

Shouldn't, but it's still a very risky proposition. What if you forgot to completely shut down Cheat Engine before playing a VAC protected game? You may try your hardest not to forget but let's face it. People forget important stuff sometimes.

Well I'll tell you what most likely would happen if you forgot to completely shut down Cheat Engine before playing a VAC protected game. VAC would more than likely detect it and you'll get banned. So my advice, don't bother with Cheat Engine.

I'm amazed at the questions that get asked here. Why on earth would you have a cheat engine (whatever that is) when you know the use of cheats is prohibited? Who cares if Steam or a game is or is not running. Don't develop, download, install, share, own, obtain, etc cheats.

To be fair, I'm fairly certain there are some legitimate developer-oriented uses of Cheat Engine.

So I've heard, anyway.

Bottom line is simple. If you need to ask, maybe you shouldn't risk it.
If you do & get banned, don't come crying here.

There are many threads on the forum about cheat engine, don't listen to the others in this thread.
VAC doesn't ban for having cheat engine running, just make sure it isn't hooked into the VAC protected game.

Many other people have done it (see the other threads), and they all reported back saying they were NOT banned.

Cheat Engine has a lot of genuine uses in Single Player games.

Cheat Engine is used for single player games. It is used for things like infinite money, unlimited health, unlimited ammo, etc. etc.

Cheat Engine won't get you banned for having it installed.

VAC bans only happen when you are connected to a VAC server WHILE playing MULTIPLAYER. VAC is not deployed in single-player campaigns of games as far as I am aware.

I have used Cheat Engine in numerous games that I have installed through Steam and have never received a VAC ban for playing in those single player games.

No need to argue with me. I'm simply saying that any use of cheats is not allowed, and if you do get banned don't come crying on the forums. What you choose to do is up to you.

Keep in mind that Valve themselves stated not to use memory editors in VAC games.
You do so at your own risk.

The OP clearly stated that he was not using it with games that use VAC.

I disagree, what he does in singleplayer (in non-vac/steam games/offline) should be his own business or at least between him and the game developers. Additionally he should also acknowledge what he is doing and what the consequences are.

Now, back to the actual question.

-- Note: This suggestion is based upon an old version of CE that I used many years ago for educational purposes --
The only advice I can give you is that you:
  • Restart your computer to break any injections it might have
  • Check for CE processes in the task manager and make sure they aren't still running after restart
  • Check to see if there are any CE services running (not sure if they exist but check just in case)
But remember you can never be 100% sure that it's not doing something behind your back. I recommend not risking it and using it on a computer separate from your gaming computer that does not contain your steam games and any other games that care about you cheating.

You will get VAC banned, don't take the risk.

You won't. As long as you don't have Cheat Engine running at the same time as VAC, you won't get banned.
@ Admin: Check out the program. It's basically a universal trainer.
