Powered By Gamespy? WTF? -SOLVED

I finally got around to getting this and bought a copy off Amazon. The box has "Powered by Gamespy" plastered all over the back and only mentions Steam on the shrink wrap so I have 2 questions:

1) What the hell is "Powered by Gamespy" (the website is vague) and will it install crap like Direct2Drive on my system that I don't need or want that duplicates stuff in Steam?

2) Will this copy also work work if I just plug the serial code into Steam like the FAQ says you can. I'm unwilling to break the shrink wrap until I get an answer.

3) Why does it only mention Steam on the shrinkwrap and why did it come from Canada?

Er, make that 4 questions.

EDIT: sorry about the paranoia, I have trust issues with Gamespy.

Gamespy is how the networking part of the game works for hosting and joining games. It is not a separate application, but integrated directly into the core game. Many games use Gamespy in this fashion like Borderlands.

While many people dislike Gamespy for hosting, it is not because of anything sinister or underhanded. The dislike mainly stems from adding another layer of complexity to the multiplayer and problems with signing in with an additional account, etc.

Direct2Drive is not an application like Steam. It does not install. It is an online store and digital download service so you can download the game you bought and install it. It doesn't install anything itself that runs in the background.

Installing the game from the disc and installing it by plugging the serial number in is the exact same thing. You'll just have to wait longer if you just the serial since you will have to download 11Gb instead of having it install that directly from disc.

A Canadian version of the game is no different than a US or UK version.

Thanks, I was wondering if was going to install Gamespy Arcade, actually. I was also worried it wasthe Direct2Drive version, because that sucks, but I'll just stick the registration key into Steam and hopefully it will work.

I was just joking about Canada - mostly.

EDIT, accepted the registration key and installing. Hopefully it wont be too crashy.
