Introduction:

Hello everyone. Following in the vein of the success of our fellow Steam member, awesome_ninjaa, I have decided to take it to the next step.

We already had a thread asking the same question:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forum....php?t=1816155

Explanation as to why this is important:

As we all know, Sanctum is a cooperative experince. It requires a friend to truly get into the game. Online coop helps us get there, but not always.

PC Gaming is a collage of different gamers, and everyone plays differently. Thats what makes it awesome. PC Gamers aren't just people who stares at a monitor all day by themselves, as PC gaming can open up and allow others to play with us.

Local coop is a rarity on the PC because in the past, most PC gamers just played by themselves. Only consoles had the benefit of Split-Sceen play. Except, in this day of age, its slowly changing.

Here is 10 reasons why:

  1. New PC GPUs suppourt HMDI-out, allowing PCs to hook up to TVs.

  2. PC monitors are getting bigger, with higher resoloutions and even have multiple-monitors with GPU services like ATi's Crossfire.

  3. In this day and age where consoles are big in today's market, finding and owning a 360 controller has never been easier. And owning two of them with an adapter is common in most PC outlets.

  4. PCs these days can easily run Sanctum at extremely high framerates at an excellent graphical quality, so they are more than capable of running splitscreen at high resoloutions.

  5. Other titles like Magicka, Shank, Deathspank, The Undergarden, Lego Star Wars III, Atom Zombie Smasher, Lara Croft & the Guardian of Light, and even the upcomming Nation Red update will suppourt FOUR local players. Same with Dungeon Defenders. And those are just more or less recent PC titles, so local coop is not unheard of here.

  6. PC Gamers always love having the freedom of choice, and I'm sure many of us would love to choose not having to rely on an online connection to enjoy the game with friends.

  7. As I have outlines before above, there is already demand of this feature. Even then, there are websites like here, or here, and even here that are deisnged to help PC players find local coop games because of their rarity.

  8. Sanctum is a co-operative game, so it makes sense it allow us as many ways to play with our friends as possible.

  9. Hoard, another recent indie game, as their own thread asking the same question. Its already 5 pages long. This shows that PC gamers DO have an intrest in this, and Hoard is the most recent example of this.

  10. Because you guys are awesome, and can help push the idea of local coop for PC gaming since there wasn't really any attempt for this in the last decade until now. The UE3 engine is able to do this in a crude way, and implementing this can be easily be done without modifying any maps or etc. Not saying it'll be easy to do, but the end result would be awesome.

Developer quotes on the issue:

Quote:
Hey!

We currently don't have it, but it's something we will look at after release.

Best
Anton
End notes:

This thread will test to see if it'll be truly worth-while to consider implementing local/splitscreen functionality. This is a test to see if splitscreen is something the Sanctum community would want.

Cheers everyone!

No

In my opinion there are far mopre pressing issues than a feature only 1/1000 people will use. Just my 2 cents.

it would be cool, but i would much rather the development team focus on more important features. this would hardly be used.

I do not sign.

Pretty useless to be honest. There are things that need working on, this is not one of them.

No, this is too useless to care about for the developers

I would probably not use this function, if it were implemented.

Like others I have said, there are way too many other things I'd much rather see. If it was like flipping a switch then I'd say sure why not, but since it would consume valuable developer time that could go to much better places I definitely vote against this.

Sorry.

While there are more pressing features that need updates, I do think this would be neat if the Devs can make it later on!

I enthusiastically sign! I agree with the OP. We need more split screen games for the PC. This would make a welcome addition.

Signed,

Mayo

Thanks for the replies everyone, this is exactly the kind of feedback I wanted to hear.

I see alot of posts that beleives that there are more important concerns atm, which makes sense and I respect that.

However
, as even Coffee Stain Studios developer Anton mentioned as well as Kenji_03, it could be something that can be implemented after release, and not take priority of more "important" patches.

Cheers.

It's not useless. That's like calling a wheelchair useless. It's highly useful for a relatively small number of players.

Valve is going to add a living room friendly interface to Steam sometime in the future so that might be a good time to introduce the feature.

These kind of threads aren't grounded in reality.

Who doesn't want a game to do everything it possibly can? It'd be awesome if Sanctum also had a creature designer and modifiable weapons... I.e. it doesn't "cost" a person to say they want something - therefore, if you ask, you should easily get a bunch of people saying they want something, because they have no reason not to.

The thing is, you ask the question with complete disregard to the fact that there's a cost in time, money, and correspondingly trade-offs in other areas associated with developing a feature like split screen. There's no sense in asking "do you want feature X" that simply. You might as well post a thread like "Who wants every feature from every TD and FPS game ever made in Sanctum".

A more realistic question, is whether you would give up other features in order to have split-screen play. Would you trade-off a bigger map selection, enemy or weapons types, or other features that make it a better/more interesting game to play in general in favor of having split-screen?

Asking players if they simply want some feature is silly, because unless they think about it realistically (as others here have done), who wouldn't want the game to have more features?

heh, thanks for the mention
It isn't something they should work right away past release, but it would sure be a nice feature to get my friend at my house without always criticizing me of PC Gamer without the ability to play on the same PC....

Dunno, it might pick up momentum? =D

Aaah way back when friends could come over regularly, I would like this, now all friends live far away and or are busy.

C'est la vie, at times~
