16:9 Screens supported only

According to this thread on the official forums TW2 only supports 16:9 screen resolutions.

If this is not resolved before the release date then I'll cancel my pre-order. That means that according to the Steam hardware survey 70% of the monitors will not be supported.

That's odd to say the least. I hope that thread is wrong, but the source seems to be a dev in a thread where users could ask them questions.

16:10 is even more common than 16:9. The other resolutions are still very common. Look at this (numbers are taken from the latest Steam hardware survey)...

16:10 = 40.05%
16:9 = 30.58%
Other = 29.37%

Yeah this is terrible. I don't want to play this beautifull game on my 22" 1680x1050 LG letterboxed .

Supporting only 30% players is riddiculous. I know like 10% from my friends who plays on 16:9, everyone else 16:10.

Wow.
I would also cancel my pre-order over this.
That is rediculous.

I'm sure this is a misunderstanding as no way will a major budget game not support 16:10 which is the aspect ratio of nearly half the market. That would be crazy.

I game at 1680x1050 so I will refuse to play this game if that's the case.

I doubt it only works on 16:9 resolution. It would say in the required specs otherwise. What it means is the game is designed for 16:9 and in 16:10 or less you lose some of the left and right of the image. Only a tiny amount for 16:10 and more for 4:3.

A bit like this:
Code:
⎡⎡ ⎤⎤
⎢⎢ ⎥⎥
⎣⎣ ⎦⎦
↑ 16x9 ↑ 16x10
This is different to a game designed for 4:3 where you lose some of the top and bottom of the image if you use 16:10 or 16:9 resolution.

I doubt anyone will be playing with letterboxing.

So chill out and wait and see when the game is released.

Not necessarily; there have been a few games in the past that were letterboxed in non-16:9 resolutions (F.E.A.R. 2, Assassin's Creed, etc.). Many Steam users have already committed hard cash to a pre-purchase and are understandably horrified at the thought of hideous black bars marring The Witcher II's luscious visuals.

While I hope this is some sort of misunderstanding CD Projekt needs to clarify this before release because letterboxing affects the vast majority of their player base and could lose them a lot of sales.

Ok so it has been shown that preview version supports letterboxing, but contrary to the OP other resolutions are supported. We don't know if letterboxing is just an option though - it's possible the screenshots floating around are taking in letterboxing setting so users can see the entire image. So either way this is all speculation at the moment.

And seriously with the minimal letterboxing you get with a 16:10 display it's hardly a reason to not buy the game. Sure voice your dissatisfaction so hopefully the devs allow for a zoomed in view, which may be supported anyway, but to boycott the game over this? Really??

These screenshots have some weird resolution, but that is exactly how a 16:9 only game would look on 16:10 displays (and I really pity the 4:3/5:4 display owners).

I am obviously not going to boycott the best rpg of 2011, still, its annoying - especially after all the talk about PC devotion, we only get support for a tv ratio.

I do have a 42" 16:9 tv connected to my pc, and a wireless gaypad, but that's not how I prefer to play rpgs.

f the game doesn't support 1680 x 1050 - I won't buy it,

The original Far Cry (2004) supports it, ME2 (2010) supports it

I GUARANTEE Skyrim will support it.

. . and for all I know TW2 will support it. Considering the fact that only 30% of gamers use a 16:9 screen - it's hard to believe they would even consider alienating the other 70%
