It's kind of worrying tho to see peoples pull out the Ecology Strawman to try to pin the blame on Valve about the fact they where completely unable to dominate their consumer/"want now" pulsions.

My my what a great society we live in...

This is absolutely the strongest argument for why this ARG finale is scandalous. You can't measure disappointment but you can sure measure the barrels of oil that were burned to fuel the CPU cycles.

It's about reducing carbon output, not stopping it. OP is pointing out a problem with the system. This was NEEDLESS use of extra power. Valve could have released the game early, or on time, not mentioned this and the carbon output would be REDUCED. Having a computer probably helps the OP do his job, buy goods, research projects, keep in contact with family.

I believe in global warming, and do my part. But I leave my computer on 24/7, folding, because I also believe that research helps humanity. But I still turn off the lights when I'm not in a room, take public transport to save on greenhouse emissions.

Thus I am reducing carbon output.
LOL! You think the OP is going to reduce his power consumption when Portal 2 releases? I am simply stating if he cared so much about going green then the best way possible he could contribute the cause is to not complain here and find alternative means to rectify his cause.

Why make a post saying Valve isn't green? So what? How much money did Valve assist in sending over to Japan with the Mann Co. Store promotions? If OP truely wanted to make a difference then he needs to take it to congress, not Valve. LOL!

Calling someone an inbreed without knowing him/her is sheer stupidity.

Point being that even if you did those things its still going to consume more energy than just buying it online.

Walking is great but it only eliminates one part of that equation, and recycling still consumes quite a bit of energy (depending on the material)

At those scales, turning on and off a lightbulb doesn't even register, but that's also why your lamps do not flicker when they start an extra turbine, but when a whole city starts lighting up you can bet that they see it in the measures.
in fact i meant this, but didn't know how to say it
