Bump...

P.S.: Did you already contact support? If this issue won't be resolved today it will be by support in a couple of days... Especially if you are not the only one with this problem contacting support.

Same problem here. OS X 10.6.7, early 2011 MBP. I've tried removing the ClientRegistry and AppUpdateStats files, no luck.

I'll note that I still also cannot play L4D2 due to the crash I detailed at http://forums.steampowered.com/forum....php?t=1816198. Possibly related?

Actually, there is a option in steam to do this: In steam, click on games then to activate a product on steam.

Edit: I haven't tried it, but this is just a hunch.

@op did u add/install your game into steam already? if not you can also use your cd-key to add it to steam using the "ADD A GAME..." In the library tab on the bottom left and when its added it'll download threw steam instead of getting it from the disc
good luck.

Tried both installs from the CD and the Digital. Just to make sure, I checked and I have already activated my Cd-key. nothing seems to work.

I fixed this bug for myself. It turns out that it's a bug that I found a few months ago.

To fix (on OS X):
  • Quit steam
  • Open up a terminal
  • Run /Applications/Steam.app/Contents/MacOS/osx32/ipcserver (leave this terminal open while you're playing)
  • Start steam
  • Run portal 2
  • ???
  • Profit!

@Roguelazer I run Win 7 64-Ult

A new problem has arisen. Whenever I Validate the Steam files it says 1 file failed to validate and will be reacquired. This happens every time I run the Validate for Portal 2, I may have just isolated the problem, at least on my part. But I have no way of knowing which file it was or if it even downloaded in the first place since it's missing 1 file every time I try to Validate. I do see the Download complete text though.

I had the problem with the menu coming up "NO STEAM" and "QUIT" which really sucked.

What I did -- restart steam twice (full quit, then restart), then right click on portal 2, properties, Local Files tab, then Verify Integrity of Game Cache... -- got me working again.

On a Mid 2008 Mac Pro, 12GB of memory, 500GB seagate hybrid drive, Mac OS X 10.6.7.

I am on Windows 7 and have tried restarting steam before, but to humor you I just Quit out and then relaunched steam twice and am Verifying again, but their is always 1 file missing every time, I have yet to have anything change with Portal 2
