I recently bought the bundle for GTA IV and The DLC Episodes, mainly because I wanted to play multiplayer so this is the problem:
I start game after installing it and sign into LIVE it says I need to update LIVE to continue I let it download an update, quit the game let it finish installing and restart. I start the game again and sign into LIVE only for it to ask to update yet again, so again I let it download the update, quit the game let it finish installing and restart again!!! Finally I attempt to start the game again from Steam, I sign into the Rockstar Social Club (before it launches), then it attempts to launch only to crash! This happens both with the code GTA IV and the standalone Episodes. Once I uninstall Games for Windows Live and reinstall it from the "Installers" folder in the steamapps/common/[gta folder]. The game can launch without crashing again but I can't sign into LIVE because it still needs an update. So the endless cycle repeats with no hope of a solution. Can someone please help me!

Update it outside of the game.
http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US/download/ If that doesn't work post what errors you're getting after xlive is downloaded and we'll go from there. |

Same problem here. It wouldnt update within the game so I had tried to install the updater from the site and now every time I try to launch the game I get a critical error. Reinstalling and verifying has not helped.

I don't know if Steam's version is the latest patched version of GTA IV, otherwise you could try patching your game to the latest version.

Yes, Steam gives you the latest version of GTA4, but I believe the game doesn't come with the latest version of GFWL. Take Madlulz' advice and install it from Microsoft's web page.

I'm have the same exact problem, but with a different game.
I have downloaded and installed the newer one, linked in this thread, and it still doesn't work. Even when I click on the Games for Windows - Live, it will show the loading window, but it gives me: Troubleshoot A required Windows component is disables on your machine. Do you want to learn how to fix this problem? All it does is take me to the support website that doesn't have any useful links. |

Ok well I just tried a different approach and it still didn't work, I reinstalled GTA EFLC then when it had finished installing Games for Windows I uninstalled it and downloaded the latest one from the site after I installed it I restarted, then used Windows Update to update Games for Windows, then restarted again only to fine it still crashes upon start up.

Same thing happened to me a while back: GFWL is a steaming heap of crap.
I eventually found the GFWL installer in a hidden folder on the disk and was able to reinstall it manually. But my long-term solution was to completely uninstall GTA4, since it's the only game I own that forces me to use that junk. |
