About logging into the game...

Do I need to download GFWL or can I just sign into my xbox account from the game menu?

Just use your Xbox live creds, they're the same thing as the GfWL stuff.

The game ships with the rest of what you'll need, and Windows update can keep those up to date for you.

You should be able to sign in from the game without installing the marketplace. GFWL is split into 2 parts, the in-game overlay and the marketplace application. As long as the in-game client is installed and running fine I don't see why you would need to have the marketplace.

The game will automatically install the GFWL client and it'll pop up as an overlay (much like steam's community system) when your run the game and will log in with your Windows Live/Xbox Live account (either automatically or manually depending on your settings). The 1st time you run it , it may ask you for your CD-Key/Live activation key for the game as well as log in details.

If you downloaded the Marketplace it's probably more accurate to compare it to EA's downloader rather than Steam. Steam's a full distribution and community platform, whilst GFWL Marketplace and EA Downloader are more akin to storefronts/distribution media.

They never had that?..

I've played GFWL games since the start and i've never been restricted to gold membership.

Wasn't one of the key features of GFWL the fact that you didn't have to pay for gold membership, right? Or did I misread something or my account just..worked for some reason.

The early days of GFWL did require you to pay for a gold membership to play online I believe. They removed that 'feature' however as it was, unsurprisingly, immensely unpopular on the PC.

That "feature" never made it to the release GFWL client, but it was in the original plan and understandably wasn't particularly popular.
